A blast at Triangle Refinery near Atlanta killed Eugene Smith, 31, Doraville, and injured at least four residents as flames damaged three tanks and forced evacuations of about 200 nearby homes. Firefighters contained the blaze by 8:30 am though lingering danger remained.
Washington High School choir members join several area choirs at a festival in Oskaloosa today. They will sing before a critic judge and take part in a special program tonight, replacing the group’s spring tour. Robert Youngquist leads the local choir.
A Guthrie Center mother of three, Betty Jean Bartley, 42, was killed when her 11-year-old son struck her in the neck with a golf club while she was instructing him. Guthrie County authorities investigated the incident as an accidental death.
At Chebuahr high school tomorrow students will host Issues Day a nontraditional learning program featuring panels and demonstrations on drug dependency hypnotism meditation and prison life among others. Films Me Natalie and All Quiet on the Western Front offer further context while attendance and participation determine if the event will recur.
Iowa Solicitor General Richard Haesemeyer urged ousting three Worth County supervisors Arnold Buechele Harvey Bartz and Boyd Harmon after an audit found gross irregularities in their expense filings from 1969 to 1971. Officials allegedly billed while in hospital and attended a private game at a contractor’s expense. The audit urged centralized purchasing and had the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation involved. Haesemeyer called the conduct appalling and said the case is not over.
Public hearings in Des Moines featured Mary Dunn urging better housing and funding for the disabled, criticizing current programs as inadequate and urging facilities over punitive policies. Daniel Smith pressed for broad criminal justice reform, calling for removal of victimless offenses and stronger juvenile programs to steer youth away from crime.
A 10 to 2 vote for acquittal discharged the deadlocked Harrisburg Seven jury in the 11 week trial over alleged plots to disrupt the government. Juror No. 6 Lawrence Evans of Dillsburg said only he and a female juror continued to seek conviction on the Kissinger kidnapping and related charges.
United Press International reports a chance of rain tonight in Iowa with possible snow in the northeast Friday. Lows range from 35 to 40 degrees tonight, mid 40s in the south, and Friday highs cold in the 40s north and around the 50s south.
President Nixon told the National Catholic Education Association that his education finance reform will include measures to preserve nonpublic schools. He described a crisis of the first magnitude for private schools serving 5.2 million children, 83 percent in Catholic institutions, and proposed new tax sources to fund public and private education. He also discussed school busing and a potential value added tax to raise funds.
Mayor Ralph Martin warns residents to avoid unfamiliar salesmen lacking city permits amid reports of pressure tactics aimed at elderly residents over Medicare. Vanguard Company reps from Fairfield allegedly press for household checks on fireproofing without permits. City requires bonds, photos, exams, and credential checks. Washington natives exempt. Martin also seeks compensation from Davenport trucking for this week’s Mobil Bulk Plant gas leak cleanup.
DES MOINES Iowa tourist spending reached 610 million in 1971 with about 33 percent of tourism dollars going to Iowan personal income. The Iowa Development Commission tourism division said total spending rose 33 million from 1970 and 81 million from 1969, with 344 million contributed by nonresidents.
