Des Moines witnessed a major World War II parade with 1 300 soldiers 172 motorized units and thousands of civilians along Locust street. Organizers expect the armed forces to reach over 38 600 000 men by year end 1942.
Norma Jean Bailey and Georgianna Callahan, both eight, picnicking with friends at a west Iowa Falls bird refuge slipped into the Iowa River. Bailey drowned after entering ten feet of water. Callahan survived after grabbing a branch and reaching shore. Beverly Hummel, aged eight, aided in the escape. The body of Bailey was recovered over an hour later downstream.
Boyd Chambers of Des Moines pleaded guilty before District Judge B F Thomas to driving with delinquent license plates and speeding 55 in town. A charge of driving over 80 in the country was continued. Also present were John Wilson and James Wallace Jr. at the arrest.
Bertram Barnes regional engineer for Chicago area and Iowa City branch head says the Iowa City weather bureau will shut at end of April as part of wartime economy reductions.

Clyde Meyers 28 of Rock Island Illinois who escaped from Pontiac penitentiary November 11 was recaptured Sunday afternoon at a friend's home in Buffalo. He was found by Davenport lieutenant William Hennesley and Scott County Sheriff Walter Bease. Meyers had been serving one year to life for the torture robbery of Viola Illinois school teacher in 1935.
Marvin Nord, 20, released on parole from Anamosa reformatory after serving eight years of a 25 year sentence for robbery with aggravation. Nord was committed May 21, 1934 from Wapello county.
The Ayers trial at Sibley State Bank centers on embezzlement charges totaling about 8 000 to 9 000. The defense motion for a directed verdict was overruled as presentation of evidence concluded and summations loom.
The Iowa supreme court held that owners and operators of slot machines face misdemeanor penalties including up to $500 fine and up to six months in jail. The ruling, reversing Polk county Judge Tom Murrow, does not settle whether pinball machines are illegal.

A large audience attended last night’s Easter music program in the high school auditorium. About 140 students participated including 65 in the mixed chorus 30 in the orchestra and 45 in the verse speaking choir under coach Opal Munger and directors Boyd White and Maurice Brayton. The auditorium and stage were decorated by the art class led by Zenta Powell Isaac of Ainsworth and several of his relatives.
Washington launches a wartime salvage drive with two city trucks starting Saturday April 18 for regular pickups of waste paper rags metals and more. A vacant lot across from the post office houses a metal bin and a future metal pen to collect materials. neighbors may deposit salvaged items and county cooperators will supervise.

Chief Hal Reister of the Washington fire department urges every former and present fireman to attend a Legion rooms city hall meeting Wednesday at seven. A lunch will be served and civilian defense cooperation will be discussed. Secretary Harvey Meek has notified 41 former firemen, and others are urged to attend even if not on the list.
Secretary of Commerce Jesse Jones told the Senate defense investigating committee the synthetic rubber program will provide usable rubber in large quantities. The program is being stepped up as shortages grow, targeting production capacity of 700,000 tons per year by the end of next year.
A swine vaccination school for Washington county farmers is scheduled for April 15. Dr. K W Stouder of Iowa State College will conduct the program. The session runs 9 am to 4 pm, with 30 seats available on a first come basis after groups of ten sign up. Applications are to be filed at the Farm Bureau office.

A five hour blaze in Estherville Iowa damaged more than $60,000 in the business district. Strong northwest winds fanned the flames and threatened an entire block. Two buildings were destroyed.
