Civilian employees of the federal government totaled 1 703 099 on January 31 according to the Civil Service Commission. In the District of Columbia the number reached 207 214. February added almost 10 000 workers, with the national total rising by over 32 000 from January and by 550 000 from a year earlier.
Wayland farmer W B Alter died at Washington county hospital after a yearlong cancer battle. Funeral services set for Tuesday at 2 pm at Stacy funeral home with Rev K J Shook officiating. Survived by four brothers and two sisters. burial at Unto cemetery near Germanville Iowa.
Ethel Stout of Chicago was a weekend guest of her parents Mr and Mrs Amos Stont.
Easter Sunday drew big audiences to Washington area churches with morning and evening services. Knights Templar held an afternoon address at the Methodist church as Bethlehem commandery led a parade and line of march.
Seventeen head of cattle and nineteen hogs died in a Saturday night barn fire near Wayland in Washington county. Lightning sparked the blaze, consuming hay grain and machinery. total loss at least 2500 dollars. The building burned fast with no one home. insurance will cover major damage. Visitors from Iron River and Cedar Rapids were noted.
Mr and Mrs Matt Braunshausen of Pleasant Plain and Mr and Mrs John Braunshausen attended a Hammond Braunshausen family dinner yesterday near Keota.

Washington reports the War Production Board restricted electric heating pad production and barred use of chromium for war material. About thirty manufacturers in 1942 may reach 1940 hospital pad levels but must reduce home use pads to half the 1949 output.

The navy has finished its first plastic plywood training aircraft a low wing monoplane built by Timm Aircraft of Los Angeles. Delivered to the navy the plane is composed of about 90 percent wood and plastic glue with 10 percent meal.

Dr Robert Stutsman son of Dr and Mrs BE Stutsman has been commissioned as assistant surgeon in the United States Navy and awaits assignment for active duty. He is on the staff of a large Cincinnati hospital and his naval application was accepted Saturday. The new duty will provide expanded opportunities in his chosen profession.
The Victory Book campaign in Washington county prepared 47 boxes of books for shipment to US armed services members. Ted Brown supervised the packing by the committee, and each box was secured with strap iron courtesy of the American Pearl Button company. The committee thanks Mr Brown for his work.
Harry Swartzendruber of five miles northeast of Wellman was bound over to the grand jury on forgery charges after admitting the act at a hearing before Justice T. W. Zillmer. The 30 year old had forged a Roy L. Yoder check for ten dollars and is wanted in Iowa City and West Liberty. He may plead guilty in district court this week.
The record notes that a shipment and his services were secured by H H MecCleery, identified as a member of the committee, indicating formal involvement in arranging the transfer and support.

A contour farming training session will be held Wednesday at 1 30 pm on the Joe Jones farm four miles northeast of Crawfordsville announced by county agent J W Chandler. He cited rising interest in contour methods to boost food production noting contour planting can increase corn yields by five to fifteen bushels an acre and will apply to soybeans as acreage grows. The Jones farm session is part of a series planned for April and early May and all farmers are invited.
