The weather observer reports a half inch of precipitation in the past 24 hours ending at 7 am. Showers led to light snow Monday night, keeping temperatures cold under overcast skies as area farmers welcomed the moisture.
Riverside youngsters in two age groups will gather at Railroad Park for ages six and under and at Hall Park for ages seven to ten for an Easter Egg Hunt at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 9 in the town parks.
Health officials report a new critical botulism case in Pontiac bringing the total to 36 in the worst U.S. outbreak. An unidentified patient was admitted to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital ICU after eating hot sauce from a Mexican restaurant with improperly canned peppers. The peppers are confirmed as the source and authorities fear cases may reach 50 this week.
Cuban President Fidel Castro held talks with top Kremlin figures including Leonid Brezhnev Nikolai Podgorny Alexei Kosygin and Andrei Gromykin after a month in Africa and a sudden Moscow stopover following Podgorny’s 13 day Africa trip.
Gerald Ford walked to work in 30 degree weather to Angell Hall as he started his four day stint teaching The Politics of Civil Liberties and Civil Rights at the University of Michigan. The 63 year old former president greeted students in Room 25 as they applauded, recalling his own Angell Hall days.
The Iowa House Judiciary Committee approved a 77 page juvenile justice reform bill 12 to 6 to set uniform rules for delinquent and in need of assistance youths. The measure now heads for floor debate after earlier human resources backing on February 17 and over a month of committee consideration.
A Southern Airways DC9 plummeted from 15 000 feet in a hail damaged windshield event, landing on a two lane highway at New Hope Georgia. The craft exploded, killing 68 people and injuring 27. Ground victims were unaware of the disaster as it struck. Captain William W. McKenzie tried to reach Cartersville but landed on the road and smashed into a grocery. The hail likely caused windshield penetration and engine failure, with four crew members aboard only two surviving. Witnesses recounted a devastating, tornado like scene with wreckage everywhere and people crying for help.
Agriculture Secretary Bergland urges a two year revival of the food stamp program with broader eligibility and lower benefits for some current participants. The plan would add 2.5 to 3 million new enrollees while cutting benefits for about 5.5 million, costing an estimated 5.4 billion dollars.
Washington City Council on first reading approved Ordinance 538 to curb unlawful gatherings and loitering in parks and near businesses. The measure bans congregating in front of doors and in public spaces, with penalties up to 30 days in jail or a $100 fine. effective upon April 7 publication.

The City of Washington and attorney John E. Baldrige agreed to an out-of-court settlement for replacing the wooden stairway in front of Baldrige Baldrige & Boyd at 210 W Washington St with metal or masonry by November 1. The deal ends a 1974 dispute over permits fire and zoning issues and is to be approved as a court decree with shared costs and no disclosed attorney fees.
Washington Community School District board reaffirms recommendation to terminate James Herrick and Michael White contracts at year end. Herrick cited enrollment-driven staff reductions in social studies at the high school. White’s contract also recommended for termination with consideration of a part time industrial arts position. White may appeal within ten days to an adjudicator. Herrick, a probationary teacher, has no appeal right.
Washington firemen were called Monday evening after a television set in the home of Mrs. Harry Ramseyer caught fire. The blaze was extinguished with only a minimum of smoke damage.
