Housing costs outstrip inflation and push down payments
The Federal Reserve reports new home buyers now need about $5,000 more for a down payment than four years ago. Despite a larger down payment, average monthly mortgage payments exceed $300, up over 50 percent since 1973. High income buyers and those with existing homes to sell can manage the rise, while rates stay near 9 percent amid abundant mortgage lending. Down payments averaged over $13,000 in early 1977, more than 10 percent above the previous year and about six-fifths higher than 1973 levels.
