Paralegal visits boost elderly legal aid in county

Washington United Methodist Church to launch fund drive

Washington United Methodist Church members voted to authorize a fundraising campaign aiming to raise 375000 for a new education unit. If pledged funds come in, construction would begin on church property west of the main building. The drive targets early completion. The campaign will be led by church leaders and involved in a Sunday morning action. A community ecumenical event will feature Rev Dr Stanley Woeste as speaker at sunrise services. The event will be held at 645 a.m. at United Presbyterian Church with the Washington High School concert choir providing music. Des Moines reports Iowa GOP fundraising plans to raise about 400000 before July 4 through Lincoln Day dinner tickets and a Republican Package Plan.

Calley loses bid for Supreme Court review on My Lai trial

The Supreme Court denied a hearing to former Army Lt. William L. Calley Jr., convicted in 1968 of the My Lai massacre. The brief order rejected his appeal from the Fifth Circuit ruling, including claims that pretrial publicity biased his trial.

Riverside House Damaged by Car Collision

A remodeled Riverside home planned for Randy Cole was severely damaged when a car driven by Ronald Eugene Krueger crossed the center line and struck the house at Hickory and Fourth. Krueger, from Lone Tree, was hospitalized after showing hallucinations en route to the county jail. Earlier, two men, Dennis Dewitt and Mark DeLong, were rescued from a burning car after it hit a bridge near Riverside and taken to Iowa City hospital.

Group abandons bid to seize National Bank of Washington

A five man group announced the offer failed to gain 51 percent control and will buy tendered shares at 1.80 per share by March 30. About 37 percent of stockholders tendered roughly 1,200 shares held by 74 individuals, with most remaining under current ownership as National Bank continues under present management.

Sunny Jim Callaghan named Britain’s new prime minister

James Sunny Jim Callaghan won the Labour party leadership in a ballot and will be Britain's prime minister to lead the nation from economic decline. He defeated Michael Foot 176 to 137, replaces Harold Wilson who resigned March 16, with a televised address planned. Callaghan, 64, a cautious, workmanlike career politician, has held top posts including foreign secretary and chancellor of the exchequer and faces inflation, unemployment, and a weak pound as he charts a centrist socialist course.
