The Iowa Supreme Court up held a three year penitentiary sentence for La verne Schenk of Vinton labor leader found guilty of criminal conspiracy tied to a 1942 labor dispute at Vinton Produce Co. Attacks included brick and stone throwing at trucks and beating of deputies.
Cedar Rapids resident Lee Kine of Grundy Center was fined 1000 dollars, sentenced to one year in prison, and placed on two years probation after pleading guilty to selling tires above ceiling prices and without surrendering ration certificates.
Eighteen residents evacuated from a three story brick structure in the business district after a blaze swept the building. No injuries were reported. Owners estimate losses near 100000. Sid Strauss owned the building and Hyde's Supply store on the main floor. a fire wall spared several offices above but suffered smoke and water damage.
Walter Anderson, 40, Taig, Cedar Rapids, was sentenced in federal court to nine months in prison on each of seven counts for giving liquor to an Indian. The sentences run concurrently. He admitted guilt on five counts of spiking drinks of three women from the Fox and Sac reservations near Tama last October. One woman, Florence Mitchell, was found dead after being struck by a tram. The remaining counts concern liquor given to two women on October 15, 1944.
Gov. Robert D. Blue forwards to the Iowa Senate two nominees for six year terms. Cole K. Van Gorden of Rep. Hm mietsburg is named to the state board of local welfare to replace resigning King KR. Gill of Sibley is nominated to the state tax commission. Both would earn annual salaries of 4000 and 4500 dollars respectively.
Federal Judge Charles A. Dewey assessed damages of 237 dollars against W B Keil a landlord from Iowa City Iowa for charging above ceiling rentals in Commonwealth apartments. The court also enjoined him from collecting further rentals in violation of the OPA schedule for the building.
Mrs John Weaver a 77 year old of Clarinda died after a shed south of her home burned. Officials said she may have been inside attempting to fight the fire or obtain fuel. A kerosene barrel was found among the debris and she died about ten minutes after being found.
A plywood airplane propeller technology bonds components electronically to achieve strength estimates up to eighteen times that of steel. The advance promises lighter, more durable propellers for aviation applications and may impact performance and efficiency.

Plaintiff R W L Richards described the January 18 1944 collision at Ainsworth with a panel truck owned by Leggett and Meyers Tobacco Co of St Louis. He testified the pavement was frosty and slick and that he remained unconscious until mid March. Additional witnesses included Lee Hunt J Rabenold Gladys Lins and Deputy Sheriff Walter Wiesey.

Joseph Albert Kolosick 66 died at home near Ainsworth after six years of declining health. Funeral plans pending for a St James Catholic church service, with arrangements by L A Jones. Survived by wife Emna, two daughters, three sons, three brothers, and four grandchildren.
