Iowa beer local option bill abandoned in senate

A Des Moines column notes the Iowa beer local option fight stalled in the senate. Senator J Lt Barkley withdrew a motion to defeat the measure, and a morning test failed when the bill to prohibit beer sales where food is sold did not advance. Only one sponsor voted to calendar the beer-food bill.

Estherville man dies in Luverne home fire

A Rock Island railroad foreman 61 died of asphyxiation and burns in a Luverne Minnesota house fire Tuesday. He had left home and on returning apparently started a stove fire. Family members were absent. firemen found him unconscious near the front door.

Fire destroys Marcus lock er plant meat storage

Marcus and Cleghorn firefighters battled a large meat storage plant fire Tuesday night. The blaze burned through the night with heavy smoke. No injuries were reported as authorities contained the fire and monitored hot spots.

Preacher Gives Bible To State Senate

In Des Moines a pastor from Woolworth Metinotist church presented the Senate with a Bible as a memorial to the late Senator fC White of Marshalltown. The ceremony followed years without a Bible in the chamber and was marked by prayer and a moment of remembrance.

Red Oak Doctor Dr. William S Heister Honored for Fifty Years

Red Oak celebrated Dr. William S Heister completing fifty years as a practicing physician with a banquet at Hotel Johnson attended by about 150 business leaders and friends. Col Caughlan delivered the principal talk. Dr Kelley was presented an award by the Montgomery County Medical Society. A testimonial program and open house followed at Murphy Memorial hospital and the doctor's home, marking his long service since 1895 with his late father Dr Oliver Kelley.

Sergeant Hoyle Killed in Action in Italy

Dale L. Hoyle, 21, was killed March 22 in Italy while serving 25 months with an armored infantry unit. Survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hoyle, two brothers, a sister, a niece, a nephew, and two grandmothers. He was a 1941 Washington High School graduate and earlier worked at Rock Island Arsenal.

Freezing Weather Brings Light Local Damages

Last night’s cold snap dropped to 27 degrees and froze ground. The freeze is not expected to cause major damage though some fear the peach crop may suffer. A brief miniature blizzard hit Washington with strong winds, while other areas saw heavy snow between Pella and Des Moines and in Des Moines northward.
