Des Moines reports Iowa land values on March 1, 1945 at 1607 percent of the 1912-14 base, the highest since 1950. The rise since 1940 remains sharp though the pace slowed from the prior year. farm value indices also reflect gains.
In Council Bluffs David Hunt 15 and Howard Dinevo lt were seriously burned when a test tube exploded in Hunt's right hand. It is feared he will lose the hand. Dinevo lt suffered burns to his left arm and face. The explosive had been prepared by a schoolmate using a beginner's chemical set.
Mrs Ray W Kamp, of Sheldon, has received an official war department notice listing her husband as missing in action in Germany since March 2. She has also received letters written by him dated March 4, 6, and 10.
Governor Robert D Blue and Iowa officials discuss Victory Day observance in Des Moines. They propose using work time as a base for celebrating while allowing temporary leave for worship services. The council notes indicate expectations and possible challenges.
Mrs. Andrew Barr of Matouette died five days after her husband, 82, with services for the husband held earlier. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs J. T. Hahn of Marquette.
The Iowa House approved a new state agency to regulate real estate brokers and salesmen, forming a five member Real Estate Commission replacing the secretary of state. Governor Blue to sign. act takes effect Jan 1 1946 with broker fees at 10 dollars and salesman fees at 5.
Maj. Gen. Maurice Rose commander of the 3rd armored division was shot to death by Nazi tank crew in Germany as he prepared to surrender his pistol to his captors. Rose's aide Maj. Robert Ballinger said Rose had already surrendered when the German tiger tank crew fired.
Funeral services were held in Chanute Kansas for Mrs. Jennie Gardner McGuire 85 mother of Mrs. Roy Means. She died March 22 after years of illness and had lived in Washington with the Means family while matron at the Nurses home. She is survived by son W J Gardner of Chanute Kansas and daughter Mrs Means of Key West Florida two grandchildren.
American forces push along the West Coast of Okinawa cutting the island isthmus near Naha. Maj. Gen. Hodges 24th Army Corps expands control around Nakagusuku Bay and moves within six miles of Naha while observation planes fly from new fields. Japanese claim ships sunk or damaged as the battle continues with engineers restoring airfields.
Lloyd Gray of 508 North Second avenue told the sheriff yesterday that the $850 he said was stolen has been recovered. It was found in the home, Gray stated, after reporting the loss last Friday from a cash box in a room while family members were away. He noted no other valuables were taken and that a thief possibly entered during the daytime.
The council postponed filling municipal positions by either mayoral appointment or election, deciding to wait for further consideration this week. They also deferred wage scale decisions and some fire department officer postings. Will Harwood joined the council. sessions included boards of health and review.
The Washington Partners' Mutual Insurance association will relocate its offices from upstairs to the large downstairs rooms in the white two story building at the square on June first. The move frees upstairs space for the AAA which will occupy all upper floor rooms, and the vault space once used by the National Bank will be accessed by the insurance offices. Draft board relocation options are still under review with a potential ground floor room offered but not finalized.
President Roosevelt announced that the United States will not seek additional votes for the country in the proposed world assembly. The note followed reports that during the Crimea conference Russia asked for three votes, with Britain and the U S previously agreeing to support it at San Francisco. The White House indicated the American representative would seek three votes only if the UN organization granted the same to the Soviet republic.
Councilman Clarence Jacobs has been elected chairman of the board and meetings will be held as scheduled.
In a renewed strike on northwest Germany Kiel the Baltic port and main naval base was targeted by about 750 heavy bombers with Lt. Gen. James H. Doolittle guiding 650 Mustang escorts. The assault follows prior heavy blows on ports and shipping centers in the region as the Allied air campaign continues.
Paris April 3. Allied forces surged into Hamm the railway hub as Patton's 2d Army split central Germany. Muenster fell after heavy bombardment. Kassel was captured as 2d Army neared the Fulda river line. Eisenhower called the Ruhr trap a major Allied victory speeding the German collapse.
Robert Wead directs fifteen high school boys to bind 45 acres of hemp in Washington County. Oetjen and O% sian run the project and thank Superintendent Schell and Principal Al Tervell for making the students available. Sexual processing will start in two weeks at the West Monroe street plant, with a new hemp crop to be planted in May and June and preparations underway for spinners and weavers.
Russian armored columns reportedly struck Wiener Neustadt and Bratislava as Feodor Tolbukhin's 3rd Ukrainian army group moved toward Wiener Neustadt. Moscow said the 2nd Ukrainian army group reached Bratislava outskirts, closing on Vienna, with other units within gun range of the Vienna area.
A jury was empaneled and opening statements given in a damage suit filed by R L Richards Cetter of Waterloo against Melvin Beseust and Liggett Meyers Tobacco Co of Louis. The case stems from a January 18 1944 collision on Highway 92 near Ainsworth when Richards allegedly struck by a panel truck while driving toward a filling station. The defendants claim counter damages and note Bentegstos was temporarily in the area for the tobacco firm. Witnesses included state highway official R A Prigk photographer Carl Guther and station operator Hugh Hallett.
