Residents recall the Washington blaze that nearly wiped out the Masonic Temple square two years ago tonight. The fire caused over a half million dollars in losses and left ashes where the commercial heart stood. The rain saved the city from total ruin as citizens faced rumors of widespread business failures.
The blaze at the Masonic Temple and nearby businesses raged through the district, destroying the Imperial hotel and several blocks. Within 24 hours plans emerged to rebuild, and two years later sturdier structures rose, filling the skyline except the Imperial corner. The city lacked fire equipment then but improvements followed.
