A young man suspected of starting fires is released on a bond set at 300 dollars and must appear for trial on January 8. Police continue to investigate the fires and identify possible suspects.
Lee Huffman, 22, of near Blessings Crossing in Northern Jefferson township, arrested in Jamestown on an arson charge. Released on a $300 bond to appear before Justice T. N. Craig on January 8. Prosecutors plan to show Huffman allegedly held a grudge against John Swaney, with evidence of a prior attempt to hire another to start the fire at the Swaney home on Christmas Eve.
A New York East Side tenement fire killed eight people including five men and three women and injured fifteen as residents fled via fire escapes. Incendiary causes are suspected and a relief effort organized. In Presidio Texas military experts predict the Ojinaga battle to be decided within twenty four hours with Federals short of ammo and Rebels pushing toward the border. U S cavalry patrol commander Major McNamee notes limited forces along the river ready to respond to possible crossings.
A fresh dispatch from Taihoku reports that thirteen Formosan conspirators were executed today for a November plot to overthrow Japanese rule in Formosa. In addition, 123 others received long prison terms.
Secretary Bryan returns to Washington from holiday and starts work on Mexico dispatches. He will not discuss John Lind's forthcoming conference with President Wilson at Pass Christian.

Tony Stafford files in the Circuit Court of Kanawha County alleging unlawful detention by state troops during the Cabin Creek country martial law. He names former governor Wm. F. Glascock Adj. Gen. Elliott and the military commission members as defendants and seeks damages of $50,000.
George F. Hunter 56 longtime Chillicothe News-Advertiser managing editor collapsed from heart trouble near his home. A Ca diz native, he entered the newspaper field in 1879 and earlier worked with Frank Harper now state printer. He leaves two children Florence and June K. Hunter. His death shocks the community.
The commission appointed by the Federal Court to decide if public safety requires holding Harry K. Thaw on bail scheduled a public hearing for January 7. All interested parties may present evidence at the hearing in Concord.

In Chestertown Maryland on December 31st the 2nd Battalion Maryland National Guard arrived at the request of Kent County judges to guard the murder trial of Norman Mabel and James Paraway for the death of James R Coleman. Troops occupied the jail and camped around city buildings as order had been restored since the indictment and confessions.
Heavily guarded by Maryland militia soldiers Jas Paraway and Norman Mabel the African Americans accused of killing farmer James R Coleman were put aboard the steamer McClean. The steamer heads to Baltimore to await trial with venue shifted to Cecil county for a March 2 Elkton trial date. Chestertown remains under martial law.
