Murder Will Out Claim Of Sioux River Confession
A rumor claims two Bayfield youths confessed to the Sioux River murder of William Ernest in August 1903. They allegedly admitted the boarding house robbery and shooting. Pinkerton reports suggested other suspects were involved and a lengthy trial had acquitted George Lafay.

Major City Fire Destroys Nelson House and Nearby Saloon Row
Last night at 11:30 a blaze consumed the old Nelson House and spread rapidly through adjacent saloons the Bumblebee and Palace, an ice house, and the Meisner and Sunquist buildings. Firefighters and volunteers saved key structures while lighting outages paused service and caused citywide darkness. Loss is estimated at 39,000 with insurance details unavailable. Miss Marion Bell returned home from Superior to visit family.

Labor Day Celebration Succeeds In City
