County Politicians Prepare for Sheriff Race and Court Term

Students march to town hall for Memorial exercises

More than 500 pupils from Walker Lincoln and Garfield schools marched to the town hall today for Memorial exercises. The procession stretched over three blocks and was led by city Superintendent Jones with help from teachers across departments.

The Ladies of the Congregational Church sponsor a Saturday market at City Drug Store on June 2 from 2 30 to 6 00 p m. Desserts breads rolls pies doughnuts cookies cream puffs baked beans and brown bread will be on sale for Sunday dinner.

Bids Sought For Cemetery Ground Clearing At Washburn

Sealed bids for clearing ground for the Washburn Cemetery expansion are due June 1 at 7 30 PM in the Town Clerk’s office. The Town Board may reject any bid. Sunday excursion by the Independent Scandinavian Workmen’s Association departs at 9 15 AM on the Steamer Lucile with return at 6 PM from Washburn and other ports.

Census Begins as Enumerators Move Across Washburn District

The 1910 style notice lists Nels M. Oscar to enumerate Washburn city and H. T. Engoe outlying territory with secrecy. Byron Harris and Bert Conklin are named for Redcliffe and Bayfield areas while J. B. Jenson directs the Washburn district in Ellsworth Wisconsin. Citizens advised to provide information if away from home.

Lake Superior Lumber Mariners Form Association

Three Washburn firms helped initiate a large lumbermen gathering at Duluth to form the Lake Superior Lumber Manufacturers Association. Officers were elected and a season cut of about 840 million feet was anticipated if 240 million feet held in streams could be brought down. Estimates note only half of river logs may be delivered under current conditions.

Happy Wedding of Nels M Oscar and Florence Robinson

A pleasant home wedding was held last Thursday at M H Robinson's residence. Florence E Robinson and Nels M Oscar were married in a Congregational ceremony by Rev John Gibson. Alonzo Shafer served as groomsman and Bessie Robinson as bridesmaid. The couple left for St Paul and Minneapolis and will begin housekeeping in Miss Hoffman's furnished cottage.

Iron River Mill Fire Destroys Main Industry

Word reached this afternoon that the Alexander Edgar saw mill at Iron River burned to the ground. It was Iron Rivers' largest institution and its loss will be a serious drawback to the town. It will probably be rebuilt at once.

Washburn High School Commencement at Opera House

Commencement exercises for Washburn High School set for June 1 at the Opera House with a detailed program including instrumental solo, salutatory, orations on Expansion and Abraham Lincoln, essays on the Red Cross and history, declamations, class colors dark red and light blue, and the presentation of diplomas. Rehearsals and songs feature the class prophesy and farewell to the class with a quartette and benediction by John Gibson.
