Ashland tax official William Landraint, assessor of incomes, announces arrests of residents who failed to file income tax returns. Beginning in Ashland, with Washburn likely next, the effort targets those liable for the tax while others will follow. The filing deadline has long since passed.
State Firr Marshall T M Purtell of Madison and W7% Finnegan of Green Bay and a stenographer were here for one or two days last week looking after matters of business. Monuments at Hansens.
Reports from men returning from the blueberry plains indicate a bumper crop next year. Weather has been favorable and frost did not damage the fruit. The west field yields thousands of quarts annually, and this season’s crop is expected to be heavier than in years past.
William Little, known as the Jack Pine King, has purchased an International Harvester gasoline traction engine for hauling jack pine bolts from woods to the Northern Pacific track near Stow's Crossing. Don Cameron will operate the engine, which promises higher output and lower costs than team hauling. The device handles rough roads easily, prompting pride in the purchase.
F H Eustes of Chicago is in charge as the Milwaukee Rating Bureau begins re rating Chicago. The city will be thoroughly reviewed and may see many rate changes as the outdated current policy is replaced. The Republican National Convention opens with adjournment anticipated. Roosevelt and Taft factions clash over credentialed delegates while La Follette delegates consolidate support for their candidate.
Tonight at the Opera House a home talent play titled The Time of his Life helps the City Base Ball team in hard luck. The cast includes Bob Grey Theodore Rude Mrs Bob Grey Arthur Peterson and many others. Tickets are 35 cents.
The City Band will give its first concert at the Commercial Club corner on Sunday evening at 6 45 reaching 8 00. It kicks off a series of summer concerts to be presented by the band.
Blexrud offers first class cleaning with a new French Dry Cleaning Machine. The common council street committee plans improvements at Washington and Bayfield streets including two concrete crossings. all year projects are permanent. Washburn Naval Militia ran a Gem Theatre show to fund armory repairs. Attorney John Walsh heads to Baltimore to attend the Democratic National Convention and second Woodrow Wilson’s nomination.
Miss Mable Pederson has returned from New York City where she studied music at the Damorsk school, regarded as among the best in the country. She plans to resume teaching in this city and invites those interested to call at the Hotel Washburn. Anton Madson of Northfield Minnesota visited the city earlier this week. Attorney John Walsh was at Superior last week for a dinner honoring W. J. Bryan of Nebraska.
The Methodist Sunday school annual picnic gathered many church members and friends at the bay shore near the pumping station. A pleasant day featured a noon lunch for about one hundred and a lively afternoon of games and activities for all ages.
Business leaders hesitate to launch a local 4th of July celebration as the City Band delays plans waiting on initiative. Meanwhile Ashland and Bayfield plan events and townsfolk may travel to join celebrations elsewhere.
Nomination papers circulated in the city over the past week indicate Irving L. Lenroot of Superior will run for re election to Congress from the 11th District. Lenroot is completing his first term and appears to face no opposition. He has devoted time to district affairs and has served as a diligent congressman.
Bids must arrive by noon July 1 1912 for labor and materials to install a hot water heating plant in the Sisters residence Washburn Wisconsin. Owners may reject any or all bids. Mail bids to the office. Local notices mention boating sale and community events.
Sprague mill resumes operations after a two to three week shutdown due to scarce logs. A large raft from North Shore points arrived, ensuring a steady run for the season with more logs expected. Also drawn for the July federal court term in Superior are Frank Gallinger W F Burnside A G Nelson Frank Carter Frank Shaw Howard West Frank Dahl Charles Blaisdell Gus Herman John Libbey Ole Samuelson.
Services next Sunday morning at the usual hour. Services at the Long Lake church at 2 30 in the afternoon. The Young People's society will meet next Wednesday evening at the home of A Berge on west 3rd street.
The Steamer Ohl was at the Northwestern uet docks in the latter part of last week with a cargo of 7000 tons of soft coal. W. L. Hunt left Monday afternoon for DuPont to oversee business for the DuPont company. Mr. Hunt holds a traveling position with the company and is well regarded by Washburn residents.

It claims broad influence over weekly salaries and leisure buyers, urging merchants to advertise now to maximize sales and avoid lost profits. Many local merchants already succeed using the Times.
The common council will consider fifteen license applications at its last meeting this month. Several patentees plan relocations to new saloon sites including John Donahue at the Schlitz building near the Omaha depot and Martin G. Larson at Capitol saloon. Charles Brunner, Vern Butler, and Ed Scamfer also switch locations.
W H Cash of New Lisbon who represents Chicago bankers visited the city and offered to purchase the county highway bonds. C H Werden, chairman of the bonds sale committee, is in Madison and Chicago this week seeking a buyer and the bonds will likely be sold soon.
The Committee on Streets and Bridges announces a two week postponement of the bid date for the Washburn sewer line on west Third street between centers of Third and Eighth avenues. Bids will be opened then per the March 7 1911 resolution. Charles Willey returns to duties as express agent after an injury.
