The Bayfield County Board committee held a second sale meeting at the courthouse but received no bids for the $50,000 highway bonds. Chairman C H Werden of Mason will travel to Chicago to negotiate a sale. Bonds issue approved by the county board carry 4 percent interest, non assessable, and run ten years.
Mrs. J. A. Keene’s dancing school returns with Friday classes at 8 pm during summer in the Masonic hall. New dances include the New England, Society Glide, Boston Schottische. Fees: 15¢ for children, 25¢ for adults. Eddorane FB Stanley visiting in Stanley, Wis. Married last Saturday at Norwegian Lutheran church were Miss Karen Stokke and Mr Peter Oie.
The Re tail Clerk's Association hosted a farewell party for Miss Petra Hovind at the Masonic Hall last evening. Homer Posey led arrangements, a lavish banquet was served, tables were well decorated, and dancing continued into the small hours with all attendees reporting a pleasant evening.
Two Ashland fishermen George Richards and Herman Zarewski died Sunday afternoon when their boat sank in Bass Lake at Topside. A search found Richards first then Zarewski, suggesting a leaky boat and failed attempt to swim to shore. Both men were married and from Ashland.
The Bayfield county fruit district near Washburn shows a promising berry crop with strawberries forming and ripening by month end. Growers expect over one hundred car loads to ship this season, with apples cherries and plums thriving and 300 acres of new trees planted this spring. The district gains recognition as a leading middle west fruit area.
Washington D C 1912 letter requests contact with Washburn Bayfield fruit growers about varieties and growing conditions for apples cherries plums peaches and pears. Letter asks for 3 or 4 representative growers and mentions a pomologist in charge. Nels M Oscar plans to attend Knights of Pythias Grand Lodge in Oconomowoc then the Republican National Convention in Chicago.
Charles Willey an American Express agent was seriously injured Monday afternoon while transferring a five gallon ice cream tank from a train to a delivery wagon. A forward stepping horse caused the tank to fall, striking him across the chest and leaving him laid up for several days.
Dr T R Spears visited Ashland Saturday to arrange a purchase from the Maytor Hoppenyan garage. The Flanders 20 Roadster arrived Tuesday and is described as a neat machine likely to bring much pleasure to the doctor.
C. H. Werden, chairman of Mason, attended the Finance Committee meeting of the County Board held in the city on Tuesday.
An injunction over the city hall lease was modified after the bank posted a bond. The Bayfield County Bank now occupies quarters in front of City Hall, with the lease running five years at $25 monthly, janitor duties by the bank, fuel by the city, and council chambers likely to be fitted in the basement.
Beginning last Monday the Omaha to Ashland short run changed its time. The train now arrives here at 10 05 rather than 10 30 in the morning. If the adjustment had been a half hour later, connections with the Duluth trains would have let the city receive the morning papers before noon.
Peter Raarup of West 6th Street is seriously ill at home after a decline this winter. Dropsy has developed and his condition is judged serious. Friends across the city hope for his speedy recovery.
Thomas G. Alvord of Superior arrived in the city last evening to start work checking the records of the city treasurer and city clerk for past terms. The engagement of an accountant was authorized at a council meeting held Tuesday evening.
The Lotus Quartet will perform a singing and dancing act at the Gem Theatre tonight and tomorrow. Manager Harrington earned praise for securing a strong show. A social dance accompanies the event at the Opera House tomorrow night. Prices are 50 cents a couple, with show prices of 10 and 15 cents.
Circuit Judge G N Risford of Ashland underwent gall stone surgery at Mayo hospital Rochester. The operation followed a period of declining health and Rochester examination by the Mayo Brothers. Friends hope for a swift recovery and prompt return to duties. Miss Mable Kinney and Mr James Cooke wed at Father Beaudette's residence in Washburn and will reside at Barksdale. congratulations poured in.
The Great Commoner William J. Bryan will address crowds in Chetek on Saturday June 15. Morning service departs Washburn at 8 20 A M with return trains after the speech at 4 52 P M northward and 7 55 P M southward. Lt Charles is secretary.
Bayfield County Bank opened in the City Hall Building last Saturday morning and has conducted business from its new stand since then. The premises have been thoroughly overhauled and present a very presentable appearance.
The Methodist church will observe Children Day next Sunday morning with an address by the pastor on Education. An early service baptismal opportunity will be offered for families wishing to have their children baptised.
The Ladies Aid society of the Congregational church will be entertained next Wednesday afternoon in the church parlors by Mrs. Lincoln and Mrs. Keene.
Only five of twenty five applicants were granted final citizenship papers after a circuit court examination Tuesday. The successful entrants were Nels Olson Ness, Washburn. Lars C. Heligheld, Grandview. Thomas Torgerson, Mason. Frederick A. Hansen, Sand Island. Ole P. Smerthy, Mason.
City Attorney John Walsh plans to travel to the Superior tomorrow for a dinner honoring William J. Bryan. Bryan is scheduled to speak Friday evening at the high school.
