USDA advices from the Western sheep country show a spring lamb shortage. Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Nevada produce only 79 percent of a normal lamb crop, shrinking wool supply. Wool and lamb contracts surge as operators seek crop lambs, with prices 9 to 10 cents per pound, higher than last year. Fleeces command 36 to 38 cents a pound on some claims.
Market notes show pool clipping up to 40 cents as ewe shortages strain breeding flocks. Early spring lamb losses due to cold weather and a lagging spring push prices higher for wool production.
Final USDA estimate places 1921 California orange shipments at about 13.05 million boxes. Wind damage of 2.25 million and January freeze of 7.2 million reduce the crop by 9.45 million, or 42 percent of production.
