Bayfield County distributes Honor Medals to World War service members from the area. County Clerk Nels M. Ostar reports the bronze cross medals bear United States Forces on the front and a grateful inscription on the back with red, white and blue ribbons.
The Times reports strong support from county board members for graveling all county highways before new construction. Letters favoring graveling note gravel roads hold up well where dirt and clay roads fail and claim proper application yields durable roads on clay or sand.
Nels M Oscar and family spend a few days camping at Siskiwit Lake enjoying rustic lakeside recreation and family time in early summer.
Farmers across Clay counties of Wisconsin will attend a Field Day and Tractor Demonstration at the State Experimental Farm in Ashland Junction on July 29. The program includes R A Moore and E J Delwiche from the University of Wisconsin, B G Packer, Walter L Houser, and local farmers. A noon picnic and free coffee are planned as Scots and others learn plowing with teams and tractors, ditching, and dairying strategies.
Farmers note hay shortages in several areas may keep prices near 20 dollars per ton on the field. With portions of the crop sold, prices could rise as the surplus is cleared. For fancy frying or roasting chickens, contact H. A. Smith at Four Mile Creek.
Amos M. Hansen reports completion and shipment of his new motor hearse by a top American designer. Arrival in Washburn within days will enable installation for Hansen's service, promising Bayfield county one of the most luxurious funeral outfits in the northwest with motor hacks and full motor equipment.
Farmers from Orienta and nearby areas held a successful picnic on Carl Nelson’s farm in Orienta with about 400 present. County Agent Brubaker urged more purebreds, showing a 29 percent purebreds and 71 percent scrubs and grades census. The event noted new settlers and welcomed permanent residents, while a future Lake Shore Community Club picnic in Port Wing was announced for August 3 inviting all to attend.
The Yoeman lodge hosts another popular dance at their lodge hall on Tuesday evening next week from 9 30 to 2 00 with a four piece orchestra. Door rights are reserved.
Bayfield hosted a grand Homecoming for northern Bayfield County with a full day of events from morning to night. Solon Perrin spoke in the morning, street sports and acts filled the afternoon, and Glacier's water circus plus a fireworks display led into a large armory dance. Washburn sent a sizable delegation as hundreds attended all day.
Montana sheep crushed by drought are moved to cut over lands in Bayfield and other northern Wisconsin counties. 5000 head arrive at Mason with grass feeding proving effective, with up to 25 000 sheep expected over two weeks. Many counties offer land free of charge to ranchers, hoping to open Wisconsin as a sheep-raising region.
Mrs. Mabel Torkelson widow of A S Torkelson dies at Ashland General Hospital from peritonitis after an operation. Funeral set for Friday at 1 pm from the family residence with Rev D W Davis of the Methodist church officiating. Interment Woodland cemetery. She leaves four children, her parents Ole Thorson and spouse, and siblings.
Bids will be received by the Board of Public Works at the City Clerk’s office in Washbury on July 28 1919 at 4 PM for sidewalk work in multiple blocks and townsite additions. Bids priced per square foot, payment via improvement certificates after contract acceptance and satisfactory work. The board may reset any and all bids. Dated July 17 1919.
Henry Swanby son of Mr and Mrs Hans Swanby arrived home Wednesday morning after an eighteen month service with the American Engineers in France. He received an honorable discharge. He has two brothers in service Alfred with Canadian forces and Ralph. Ralph has returned recently and Alfred expects discharge from the Canadian Army within a month or so.
The Methodist Aid Society will meet with Rev. Davis next Wednesday afternoon at the parsonage. Everyone invited.
Pastor D W Davis invites all to Sunday school at 9 45 a m with Mrs F T Beers as superintendent and Epworth League at 7 p m Public worship at 8 p m Midweek prayer meeting and Bible study on Wednesday at 7 30 p m Includes cordial invitation to all services.
The county clerk Oscar calls on soldiers to submit applications for Honor Medals at the Clerk’s office. This notice urges eligible veterans to file claims promptly and directs applicants to the county office for details.
Undertaker Bratley of this city conducted the first auto funeral this week using an automobile hearse. Previously teams drew the hearse and autos carried attendants, but the combination proved problematic. Bratley plans to secure an auto hearse for future orders.
Miss Edna Estabrook daughter of Mrs D J Estabrooks returns to the city Tuesday evening after serving with the American army as a Red Cross nurse since the war began. A graduate nurse of high standing she expects to visit relatives and friends for a time.
Mrs. Ole Johnson an 82 year old from Tacoma Washington arrives in the city Sunday afternoon to visit her sons Mr. Fred Anderson and Mr. Gust Lund. Despite her age she made the journey alone and enjoyed it though fatigued by the long travel.
Willard F. Farnham aged 69 died at his home on the city outskirts Monday evening after a stomach illness. Funeral from Bratley parlors Friday at 3 PM with interment in Woodland Cemetery. He had resided here for years and was well known citywide. He leaves a wife and several children.
P. T. Trowbridge came back the latter part of last week from a trip to the southern section of the state.
George Frostman age nineteen son of Mr and Mrs August Frostman of Houghton died Sunday after a diving incident at a spring board on the lake. He suffered a head injury and concussive brain damage before a doctor could reach him. He leaves four brothers and two sisters, was a Washburn High School graduate, and his funeral was held at Woodland Cemetery in this city.
E Bergmann learned his son George, serving over a year with American forces, is on a transport home and expected in the city this week. George led a regimental band during the final months of service and the band returns as a unit to the United States.
A gospel meeting is set for next Sunday afternoon at 2 30 at the Y M C A conducted by Carl A Lund of the Swedish Baptist church in Ashland The program will feature city singers and will include both English and Swedish preaching and singing A welcome is extended to all.
Captain H. H. Peavey, who had been sidelined with illness during the past week, was able to be around again and attend to duties.
