County Agent W. E. Brubaker details how Door County cherry growers formed the Door County Growers' Union, set grades, and opened a canning factory to stabilize prices and handle overripe fruit. The effort aims to turn skilled cultivation into a reliable marketable crop for Bayfield County.
Congressman A P Nelson of Wisconsin reminds Bay field county veterans they may request an application blank to obtain permanently retained clothing and equipment after honorable discharge or furlough to the Reserve. Eligible items include overseas caps, hats, shirts, coats, footwear, gas mask, barrack bag, scarlet chevrons, and more with sizes and service details required.

The Great Lakes St Lawrence Tidewater Association will hold its national council and executive committee meetings in Duluth August 13 and 14. The event will be the largest gathering yet with members from 10 states and commissions formed by state laws. The executive committee includes H Gardner Chicago G G Hartley Duluth William G Bruce Milwaukee Sidney T Mills Detroit J E Coad Superior. Trends and policies for the waterway project will be discussed along with coordination among states.
Ashland Colts beat the local team 10 to 1 at home last Sunday afternoon. The game on the home diamond was one sided with the Ashland aggregation overpowering their opponents.
Hundreds attend the Ashland Junction Experimental Farm field day where six to seven tractors showed plowing and discing in clover sod tests. Lectures by state agricultural leaders followed by questions highlighted best soil tillage methods for farmers across northern Wisconsin.
Fr Hyacinth leaves the local Catholic parish for Ladysmith this week or next after several months of service. Fr Nelson, discharged Army chaplain, will arrive to lead the church. Wisconsin land prices rise with high farm product values, boosting upper Wisconsin settlement.
Prof E J Delwiche of Ashland Junction returns from a western tour with the University of Wisconsin extension division. He finds the Chequamegon Bay agricultural situation favorable and notes Wisconsin peas compare well with western crops after inspecting western peas for improvement.
New dental equipment for C O Wescott D D S arrives late last week and is installed in his offices with Drs Frey and Lampson. The setup includes electric drilling and sterilizer X Ray unit sanitary bowls stands cabinet chair and more. Wescott, a Marquette graduate and Washburn alumnus, opens practice this week with strong recommendations.
George Bergmann son of Mr and Mrs E Bergmann returned Wednesday evening after honorable discharge from the army. He served with the American expeditionary forces in France for over a year in the Ordinance department and led the regimental band. He reports he is glad to be home and looks well.
Farmers near Washburn began cutting grain as ideal weather continued for ripening. Rye looks heavy and wheat and oats will follow. Bayfield county reports excellent growing conditions with ample moisture and a predicted bumper crop across all grains per County Agent Brubaker.
Through federal postal inspectors the arrest of Thomas Tollefson in St Paul connects to a state led investigation of the Anchor Shipbuilding Company in Washburn and Duluth. Tollefson, once Burnett county clerk and Superior bank cashier, faces a blackmail charge after mailing letters to W Nicolaysen.
Captain E A Hastings, of the 88th Aerial Squadron, visits the city this week at his sister Mrs A W MacLeod's home. Trained in the French aerial school and served with the French army until the US entered the war, he joined the US squadron and served to war's end. A taciturn veteran, he was among the aces whose skill helped win the war.
No services at the church next Sunday if weather permits. If not, the outing will be at Fairbanks with a 10 o clock service. Look for the flag along Ashland road. Ladies Aid meets at the church Wednesday hosted by Mrs Rev Christensen.
The Lake Superior District of Minnesota Conference will meet at the Swedish Lutheran church on Monday, August 4 at 2 p.m. Com munion service by Rev. O. H. Nelson of Superior. Short talks by E. Floren of Poplar and Paul Esping of Ashland. Evening service by Rev. T. Eckbald of Superior and Rev. E. J. Nordin of Port Wing. Everybody welcome.
