Bayfield County spent $1726 for bounty payments on wolves wild cats lynx cub wolves. The state matched this amount, with 144 wolf scalps 53 wild cat scalps 1 lynx 31 cub wolves listed. Modern Woodmen and Royal Neighbors are invited to an installation Friday January 14 with C N Cramer & Co offering two horses for sale.
The Northern Pacific Railroad is urged to build a connecting line from Grantsburg in Burnett County to Iron River. Commercial clubs and business groups across northern Wisconsin and northeast Minnesota are asked to join, circulate petitions, and support the project led by the local Commercial Club. The effort restarts after being stalled several years ago.
The company, after engineers and traffic men advised against it, is now viewed as having potential. Land owners along the proposed route and others across the affected area are rallying support, and petitions are expected to attract many signatures from shippers once circulated.
Special services continue at the Congregational Church each evening with Rev. Pyrant delivering sermons from the Sayings of the Cross. Tonight’s topic is I thirst, tomorrow It is finished, and Sunday morning features Father into Thy hands I commend my spirit along with Communion. New members will be received Sunday.
A ten horsepower gasoline engine arrived late last week and has been installed by machinist R Stienert. The dynamo style engine will supply sufficient power for the machine shop operations at R Stienert & Co.
In January the city hosts numerous lodge installations with feasting and dancing. Beavers meet Monday, K of P Tuesday, Forester lodges join Ashland Friday, Modern Woodmen Friday, E F U Monday. James and Emma Rayburn visit family. John O Sullivan departs for Merrill en route home to Eau Galle.
The City Council failed to override Mayor Dibbell’s veto of leasing the Commercial Club room to O. A. Lamoreaux. With a likely two thirds vote unlikely, the measure remains blocked while post office relocation plans continue, with Kinney building or Maxcy building considered as alternate offices near Washington Avenue.
The County Board Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds invites bids by January 15 1910 to furnish about 100 cords of green hard wood and 100 cords of green hemlock, three feet long, delivered to the Court House during winter. The committee may reject any or all bids.
The Knights of Pythias announce the fourth annual Carnation ball at the Opera House on Friday evening February 4. Dance committee arrangements are underway for a premier social event of the season.
The third lecture in the stereopticon course will be held next Wednesday January 19 at the Methodist church. It offers a pictorial study of nineteenth century Mohammedanism covering Turkish rule, economy, city life, scenery, and customs. Views include the Bosphorus, Sultan Abdul Hamid, young Turks, Whirling Dervishes, and American Board buildings.
Notice calls for written bids by noon January 20 1910 to lease the Washburn Ice Company plant for one year. Bid must state amount willing to pay for use and buyer must purchase on hand ice from former manager William Olson. Ice price to be agreed with current manager. Board reserves right to reject all bids. Additionally local items note a deer on Fifth Street and various visits and travels of residents including Geo T Fox O Davidson Claus and Miss Florence Ramstead.
The Mens' Club of the Congregational Church invites the wives and sweethearts of its 50 plus members to a Monday banquet at Masonic Hall with 9 30 P M supper. A literary and musical program features Prof M W Mathews, Hon W F Shea, and Hon Allen T Pray with solo works and an Irish travels address.
Bayfield sources confirm purchase of the Dalrymple logging railroad near Cornucopia by Soo interests. They plan a new Ashland to Superior route along Lake Superior with a Port Wing and Orienta stop pattern, connecting at Ashland with Wisconsin Central. Also notes births and local social items from Bayfield and Ashland.
Black River Falls Wisconsin with 1947 residents sold 98 000 stamps at one cent each and earned the $1 000 Aero vacuum cleaner for the city. Burlington Racine county placed second with 56 450 stamps per inhabitant 22 35 100 per person. Milwaukee First Ward school sold 103 633 stamps 139 per pupil to win another Aero unit. Dr H E Dearholt notes Wisconsin leads nationally in the crusade against consumption.
