District Attorney Alvord reports a murder occurred yesterday in Barnes. Sheriff Severson will depart for Barnes this afternoon to investigate and an arrest is anticipated. The victim was a homesteader in the town.
Joan Colberg reports three cows poisoned after drinking from a stream flowing by a dynamite plant. The water appears to have contained acid. Mrs. B. E. Kenfield left yesterday for Cass Lake for a short visit.
R A Hering suffered severe acid burns to face and arms at the Eastern Dynamite Company plant in Barksdale on Monday morning. He slipped on a stool and struck a faucet, causing nitric acid to spray his face. He was rushed to Ashland hospital where doctors feared blindness but later thought he might recover with minimal eye injury.
O A Lamoreaux visits Cass Lake for business tied to a local box factory project. F A Bell sells his Iron River area farm, praised as one of the county’s best, noting distance and travel costs influenced the sale.
Thomas Hendrickson reported iron ore tests from his land in section 33-49-5 on the Iron Range. Water tested 7.40 percent iron and rock 11.18 percent. He plans better rock samples and gravel tests and expects iron companies to test with diamond drills, possibly leading to a mine and ore docks in the city.

Col Isaac H. Wing died at his Bayfield home after a month long illness. Born 1822 in Winthrop Maine, he rose as a wealthy, influential figure in Bayfield County politics and business. A Republican, he supported friends for public office and helped sponsor John C Spooner, with whom he shared many years. Funeral services were held at his residence and he was buried in Greenwood Cemetery Bayfield.
Miss Ethel Bean, who spent the last two months visiting Kingston, Canada, has returned home.
Mr. Woodworth and his wife are in the city serving as special deputies for the Beavers to recruit new members. During their stay they have already added over twenty-five new members seeking applicants.
W T Kennedy of Amery was the highest bidder at the Monday sale of twenty year Municipal lighting bonds issued to buy outside electrical equipment for Washburn Electric Light and Power Company. Bidders included S A Kean of Chicago and Northern State Bank. Bonds sold for 15200. city becomes owner after certificates and payment are arranged.
The regular morning service at 10 45 features a sermon titled The Man who knows the Trail. Sunday School follows at 11 45. A union service with Congregational and Methodist churches is at 8 pm with Rev Weiss preaching and the choir on duty. The newly organized Young People's Alliance meets at 7 15 pm in the downstairs room for its first session. The Ladies Aid meets with Mrs Frank Downs on Pine street next Wednesday afternoon for the last Conference year meeting and officer elections.
Bayfield County hunters face a late license issue as a bulk shipment of blank licenses to the county clerk has not arrived. Tracers have been sent without success, delaying license issuance until after the third season opens. Bird season starts next Sunday, but applicants may still hunt.
Pupils will meet for the distribution of books on Saturday August 31 at 2 pm. Students must be present so work can begin on Tuesday with minimal interruption.
Martin Sundeen returned from Eau Claire after a week away. Frank Steele worked his homestead Monday afternoon. The 14-48-6 land was referenced. Wm Burns and Ben Runkle finished blueberry picking shipping nearly one thousand crates. County Surveyor H C Nelson from Bayfield mapped grade for new cement walks in the lower town.
Iron River saloon men and the Civic League reached a deal to close all bars after 11 p.m and on Sunday forenoon. Warrants had been issued for 17 and then 17 more for keeping places open on Sunday. the case was set for trial but dropped as costs were paid and an agreement was reached to enforce the hours.
The Barksdale ball team lost to the Indians in Odanah last Sunday with a 9 to 6 score. A large group traveled from here to watch, riding a gasoline yacht to the game.
Washburn second team traveled Sunday to play Ashland Fashions. The contest lasted ten innings and was praised for quality. Washburn edged Ashland 4 to 3 to claim victory.
Bayfield defeated Her ing's squad on local grounds last Sunday afternoon with an 11 to 3 scoreline. The win featured solid offense and strong pitching from Bayfield to secure the victory.
Regular preaching at 10.3. Sunday school at 12 M. Choir singing is planned. Christian Endeavor at 7 p.m. The evening union service will be with the M. E. church at their home of worship. Sermon subject is Saving Life and Losing It.
Nels Myhre and his children spent a week in Baldwin and the Twin Cities. Mr Myhre returned home Monday while the children stay to attend school in Baldwin. Fritz Rentchler and family of Sioux City are visiting. he owns substantial land in the county bought from the Loveland company.
