A severe storm Sunday produced hail the size of a hen’s egg and heavy rain, causing widespread window breakage and crop damage. The downpour lasted about 25 minutes with flooded streets and washed out bridges at the town’s lower end. Many fruit pickers and fishermen were drenched, mostly sheltering.
County Treasurer John Froseth reports unusually high demand for tax certificates this month, with over 3000 dollars worth disposed of by yesterday. Certificates are increasingly taken on city and village lots and on acreage, with all certificates except 1907 sold at face value.
A. Paulson dry goods store closed Monday as Mr. Paulson retires. The premises will be fitted up and occupied by M. Picott & Co. with an up to date stock of dry goods ladies furnishings and fancy goods after the 26th of the month.
The Bayfield County Telephone company will deploy about fifteen workers within a week for major line upgrades in the city. Workers will tighten slack on wires straighten poles and perform additional improvements. Miss Bessie Graham visited Ashland Tuesday. A number of residents accompanied the baseball team to Hayward last Sunday.
The Washburn creamery, idle for a time, will reopen within a week or two with O. J. Sehmaling of Avalon in charge. Farmers are urged to bring cream and milk. highest market price will be paid for butter fat as the plant aims to operate year round.
Two schooners from the Hines fleet in tow of the steamer Wiehe went ashore near the Commercial dock during a gale Sunday afternoon. The line between steamer and schooners broke, leaving Norris and Tilden stranded until tug assistance arrived after six o clock. Hundreds watched as the vessels grounded in sheltered area and were later freed.
Well attended social event by the Backsdale baseball team at the Opera House last Friday evening. The Peterson orchestra provided the music and the affair was reported a complete social and financial success.
A large group attended a surprise party for Gilbert Olson of third street hosted by the I S W A lodge last Saturday evening. Olson received a purse of just over one hundred dollars. Mrs. Martin of Minneapolis visits the Kearns residence this week. she formerly lived here. Congregational church ladies meet with Mrs. Weiss at the parsonage next Wednesday afternoon. The steamer Mary Scott will run to Wahburn after the Carnival tonight for attendees to return home. Carlton Thompson and Siggurd Egge left for Duluth to enlist in the U S Navy. A Paulson, Mrs. Oistad and Mrs. James Kinney travel to Black Earth after their mother’s death. They mourn the loss with the community. Dewitt’s Carbolized with Hazel Salve is advertised for wounds and kept at Sweets Drug Store.
Hayward’s baseball team topped Hering on Saturday evening and won Sunday’s game 11 to 3. The visitors fought hard but the Hayward squad proved too strong.
A severe Sunday night storm struck the residence of Aunt Peterson on West Bayfield street. The house sustained only light damage. Oscar families and Mrs. Paul Weed and son from Ashland are camping at their cottage south of the city this week. Reverend Father Dunstan travels to Tetopolis Illinois to preach then attend priests retreat. T. H. Robinson heads to Wausau for the Knights of Pythias state convention with visits to Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls before return.
A method from Woman's Home Companion describes using an inverted bowl, wrapped butter, and a damp napkin to wick cold water up to the butter. Place a large bowl on the table, invert a small bowl, set the butter dish on top, cover with a napkin, fill with cold water to the butter, and cover with a towel. After two hours, the napkin is saturated and the butter should be firm.
The U S S Gopher, a training ship for marines and sailors, anchored in Chequamegon Bay Tuesday at Ashland harbor with over a hundred men aboard. From Chequamegon Bay the ship sailed to Two Harbors and Duluth and will stay in the latter port for a period.
George Oscar visited Duluth at the start of the week while Hutchinson unloaded coal at the dock. Ralph Erickson arrives from Ironwood for a short stay with relatives. John Kearns returns from Duluth for a week with his parents. A brakeman named Stocking on a Cable turn around train loses a finger in a Monday night coupling. Estella Sweet of Lake Linden Michigan visits Ciara Marsh for a few days. W A Loveland from Minneapolis markets Bayfield county farms to several buyers. C W Blain of Grand Rapids Michigan lectures with stereopticon at the Norwegian M E Church. Joe Tracy’s reported arm injury amputation rumor later denied by family.
Governor James O. Davidson issues the Labor Day proclamation designating Monday September 2 as Labor Day in Wisconsin. He urges closing establishments and calls for harmony between workers and employers while stressing unity and shared American citizenship. The proclamation is signed in Madison on August 19, 1907.
Dr. Mort of Ashland rents the former Dr. Mertens rooms in the Northern State Bank building and begins local practice. He has lived in Ashland for four years as others travel to events in Benoit and Mercer. Will visit Beville Ontario and Coleraine Minnesota for family and business plans.
