Hot Baseball Season Sparks Bayfield Washburn Rivalry

The Chequamegon area sees a fever for baseball as Washburn Bayfield and Ashland import players to form strong lineups. Washburn leads with the hottest team as complaints rise over fan noise and sportsmanship while Bayfield and Ashland lag, and talk turns to a local Teachers Institute drawing unusual interest.

Labor Day Celebration Set for Washburn

Labor day events will be held in Washburn on September 3 with the Mill Mens Union organizing and support from city unions. Ashland abstains from the planned cooperative celebration, choosing to celebrate independently, while Bayfield Port Wing and nearby towns join in. A surplus Fourth of July fund will fund the day, committees are named, and parade plans are in motion as unfavorable weather limits activities.

Washburn Ball Team Tops Lakes Trip Until Loss to Interstate

Washburn's baseball squad led the Lakes segment but fell 12 to 4 to the new Interstate club in Duluth. Red Thiery, previously with Superior, struggled with control and was hit hard at times, while umpire York drew protests for disputed calls. Sunday rain halted play after Washburn led 5–2 in five innings with Wiggs on the mound.

Farewell Service For Washburn Pastor Ingham

Morning service at 10 30 marks the farewell of Rev Ingham after three years with the congregation. He will speak at Sunday morning service and bid friends goodbye. A union service follows Sunday evening at the Norwegian Lutheran Church. The couple plans to move to southern or central areas of the state.

A O U W Convention Set for Next Tuesday and Wednesday

The Thirty first anniversary and the Eleventh Annual Convention of the A O U W will be held in this city next Tuesday and Wednesday with a large local committee and many delegates expected. Hon J M Thayer grand Master Workmen of Wisconsin is to attend along with other distinguished members. An elaborate entertainment program includes a Washburn baseball game and social events.

Post 103 Spanish-American War Veterans Organized

Sunday afternoon August 19 a new Post No 103 of the Spanish American War Veterans was formed at the old G A R post room in the town hall. Fifteen initial members, mostly Co K 4th Wisconsin volunteers, aim to grow to about thirty as ex-soldiers enroll. Officers elected: Commander John McKay, Senior Vice Commander William ONeil, Junior Vice Commander Roy Hulk, Adjutant Harvey Irish, Quartermaster John McBeath, Chaplain Peter J Bestler, Officer of the Day Andrew Richardson, Officer of the Guard John H Berry.

Sunday night union service invites all congregations. Rev Davison speaks on Sabbath amusement with the topic Is there any harm to man physically and socially in a good game of baseball on Sunday. The lecture uses flags and charts for illustration.

Miss Minnie Anderson, longtime hello girl at the local telephone office, has resigned to pursue musical education. She is expected to achieve success in the musical world. A timber-claims party also departed for the west Tuesday, including P. H. Guerin W. H. Trish D. W. Corning Henry Hockdanner and John Allan with several accompanying spouses. Mrs. Joseph Riley of Chippewa Falls will join at St. Paul to travel with them back to their claims via Spokane.
