Grandmother Smith of Houghton Dies at 83
Mrs. J. D. Smith known as Grandm a Smith died at her son Charles Smiths home in Houghton Monday morning at age eighty three after a long illness. She was buried at Protestant Cemetery yesterday. Born in Ontario, she moved to Dakota in the early 1860s, lived on a farm, then settled in Houghton twenty two years ago. Her husband died three years ago. She leaves four sons Fred of San Francisco Ed of Lewiston Idaho William of Meadowlands Minn and Charles of Houghton.

Shingle Mill Opens in City Under Akeley and Sprague
The Akeley and Sprague shingle mill began operations Monday and is expected to run steadily through summer, employing about a dozen men. The Marsh-Hathway planning mill also runs at full blast with over a million feet in stock. Mrs. Alfred Marsh visited Odanah with relatives. Ex Sen J J McGilvery of Black River Falls arrived to investigate the death of Joseph Hall, his father in law, a noted architect and former speaker pro tem of the Wisconsin Senate.

Wold Arrested in Spokane for Abandonment
Sheriff Severson located Louis Wold, former Norman House proprietor and Spokane resident, and brought him back. Mrs. Wold filed a warrant for abandonment. governor’s requisition papers are in Sheriff Severson and the district attorney’s hands. Alvord departed for Seattle to testify in the R. A. Hering dynamite case.

Peculiar Case of Joseph Hall Found Dead at Barrons Shanty
The body of Joseph Hall was found in the Barrons shanty by John Talbot after a week of death. Coroner H G Mertens and Chief Wescott investigated the scene where Hall appeared maimed and the room in disarray. A theory shift suggests self-inflicted collapse, with Hall possibly dying from exhaustion after a self-destructive spree. Robert Strang, present March 29, was arrested pending inquiry due to connections to the scene.

School fund cut by commissioners lowers request
At Monday night’s school commissioners meeting the request to the common council for city school funding shrank from 15 500 to 13 000. The board says they can operate the schools on the reduced amount to curb expenses.

Officer Assaulted After Saloon Breakup at Omaha Depot
Patrolsman G. Chauvin was assaulted by John Olson at Ed. Jackson's saloon near the Omaha depot after midnight. Olson refused to leave, struck Chauvin with a wood block, and bit the officer. Chauvin subdu ed him and took him to jail. Olson received a 45 day county jail sentence. City saloon hours and local politics noted with Joe Stanley's illness.

Savage elected municipal judge in Iron River battle
Peter J. Savage of the Iron River Pioneer won the Second Municipal Court seat in Iron River. He defeated incumbent Ernest Sauve by a projected county majority of about 520, in a fiery Bayfield county race. Sauve carried Iron River by 90, with Bayfield town yielding Savage’s largest margin.

Successful Operation At St. Joseph Hospital
W F Young of this city was taken to St Joseph Hospital in Ashland suffering with a severe mastema disease of the bones of the head. Dr Braun performed a difficult operation and the patient is improving with hope of recovery.
