The Shah in Vienna and a Shah’s oddities in 1873
The Shah Nasr-ed-Din of Persia visited Vienna in 1873 for a world fair and stayed in a summer castle near the city. Accounts say he and his party ate with hands, caused spills, and sought executions but found none. On a 1888 visit he observed Austrian cavalry, admired a Hussar sabre, then struck a Persian secretary with it in a private display, shocking all witnesses before praising the regiment.
