Dawes Blocks Senate Plan To End Session

In Washington on May 28 Vice President Dawes cast the decisive vote to break a tie and defeat a move to adjourn the Senate tomorrow. The plan backed by Republican leaders would have kept the chamber in session until June 2 or 5. The galleries applauded as Dawes announced the tie and the chair’s decision.

Daylight saving defeated in borough vote by 457 margin

Daylight saving is dead after a decisive unofficial election defeat. Opponents led 1,564 to 1,107 ballots. Burgess E. Chapman said he would veto the proposal passed by the council in adjourned May session. Five voting machines aided the process, tallying 1,161 no and 1,005 yes across machines.

Man in wreck crew crushed between moving box cars

John Muccino, 40, of Olean, is in critical condition at Warren General hospital with internal injuries sustained while helping clear a Pennsylvania freight wreck at Tioga on Sunday. He was crushed between two derricked box cars moved by a wrecking train. twenty cars derailed after a broken rail caused the pile-up north of Tioga. Trains were detoured while crews from Kane, Olean and Erie cleared the track. The 70-car train 4369 carried coal and brick. Muccino was part of the Olean wrecking crew.
