Recent disclosures expose bid rigging on post route 8886 from Pittsfield to Broken Straw with a Missouri bidder winning at 389 dollars. Subletting schemes to soldiers aim to dodge proper bonds, drawing sharp critique of government contracts and calls for Democratic remedies.
A May 9 explosion on a Coskirk dock killed engineer Charles E Foote and nearly drowned seven other workers. Eight men were on the pile-driving crew when the boiler burst, throwing all into the lake. Rescue crews saved the seven, though Foote’s body was recovered after the blast. The Dailer had stood unused for years, recently refitted.
The twenty second annual Lake Erie Dental Association Convention convened with the new association embracing dentists from Erie, Warren, Crawford, Venango, Mercer, Forest and McKean counties. Officers elected for the year include President Dr. D C Dann Meadville Vice President W Green Forest D C Eliott Meadville Treasurer EB Br Allen Girard and Board of Censors W H Vanarsdale Sharon Cyrus Lee McKean D D Magill Erie I A Todd Venango J D Magill Evie Cyrus Lee McKean and G W Green Warren as delegates to the State convention.
Warren WCTU members plan to circulate remonstrances against licenses in the borough at the June term of Court. They seek church and Conewango Lodge of Good Templars support. Remonstrances will be circulated starting this week and continue until Court convenes next month. A large number of signatures is anticipated.
Directors plan widening scope after successful collections. Measures will be taken to present the association to county merchants to secure new members and extend the work beyond city limits.
Lillian Russell, also called Mrs Harry Braham, wed Edward Solomon in Jersey City to satisfy divorce laws after her recent split from Braham. Solomon, composer of the operetta Dolly, plays a leading role. The Caligraph works left Corry for New England, costing about 150 jobs, while Downer oil works had little impact.
Sr. Petserssure May 10 report that Prince Lobanoff Rastowski Russian Ambassador to Austria is poised to succeed M De Giers as Foreign Minister. Lobanoff was summoned from Vienna last March to advise on the Afghan frontier question and is known to hold strong anti English views.
Moody of this place and Samuel Nichols of Titusville lay in repose after a Sunday burial. Moody died Friday at 83 and Samuel Saturday just after 90, both after long illness. Old age cited as main cause. The town notes a creamery cellar being built and road machinery from Pennock & Sons Co. promoted. A boy injures teeth at the Burg, and a two day snow storm hits. Local farming activity, temperance advocacy, and community events are described along with milling, schooling, and social gatherings in Spring Creek.
In a woods incident last Monday Mr Harper's boy and two companions threw an empty glycerine can at a pipe, causing an explosion. A boy named Starper suffered severe head and limb injuries and a large wound on the side. Dr. Neath says recovery is unlikely. Local items note Mr McNett in Buffalo and others visiting Clarendon.
The close of the school year in late May features anniversary exercises class sermon exhibition commencement and Alamant Association meeting. Dr Ryan will deliver the class sermon Sunday evening May 24. The exhibition happens Thursday evening May 28 in Library Hall. Drawing exercises set for May 29 in Library Hall.
Glade township eyes revived oil activity amid a 100 barrel well at the Eddy lot and strong McWilliams performance on the Lacy farm. A Wardwell pool extension is anticipated before summer's end, signaling rising prospects in the region. New postmasters named in Pennsylvania include Isaac Hillard Ackermanville and Geo Kreps Grandville among others.
A Third Street man jokes about the climate as he searches for his spring overcoat among his wife's rag bags. He quips that it is a charming climate, while his wife sighs. The man retorts that the climate feels like nine months of winter and three months of early spring.

An unknown man was killed on the Philadelphia and Erie Railroad near Kane yesterday afternoon. The Pullman, Dingess and Co show gave two exhibitions in town last Monday to good sized audiences. The Pinafore Company has been asked to perform at Library Hall for the benefit of the Library. Mrs. Annie Wittenmyer lectured at Baptist church on Camp and Hospital. A slight blaze in the vestry room of St Joseph's church called out firemen yesterday afternoon with little damage. President Noyes invites Warren residents to a Library Association meeting Monday evening May 18 at 7 20. George P Orr remains hurt from a runaway. he showed signs of improvement and may recover.
Patrick Crawley, about forty, was struck while lying intoxicated on the D., A.V. & P. Railroad near Warren. Engineer Wimball said the train could not stop from fourteen miles per hour. verdict found Crawley intoxicated across the track with no blame on the railroad.
J K Emmet brings his well known Fritz in Ireland to Library Hall on Thursday evening May 21. A Brooklyn Theatre review notes his voice is richer and more expressive than ever with a large set of new songs and strong stage presence delighting a distinguished audience.
