Monument of a Man and His Folly in Masquerade
A dramatic tale tells how John Jones labored from age fifteen to fifty to build a grand monument with money borrowed against his family’s welfare. He spent all earnings, stole and pawned household goods, and caused his wife and baby’s deaths through exposure. By fifty his body bore scars from labor, his language coarse with oaths, and his monument stood in a prime city spot rather than a cemetery. A visionary notion contrasts with the charity an asylum might have afforded.
