In a lakeside Ontario camp story Stranton recalls a panther attack at a parsonage. A mother Susan and a baby hide in an attic using a skylight trap, lamp flame, and a stubborn sash to fend off the beast. Neighbors pursue the predator. hunt ends with panther slain by a local party.
A physician notes that the foolish virgins once lacked oil, now they squander kerosene. He adds that perpetual high spirits exhaust others, but warns perpetual low spirits also wear people out. The passage ponders balancing temperament and energy in social life.
