Niagara River tragedy and legal cases dominate New York state items
A Niagara Bridge worker James Munday fell into the river and disappeared amid whirlpools. The Court of Appeals ruled on Joseph Disher's long-running railroad injury suit. Gas strikes and oil prospects surge at Canisteo and nearby towns, with gas lighting trials and bustling drilling. In Lockport and Mary Sandtredt cases, religious fervor and mental health issues appear. Poughkeepsie, Youngstown, Bedford Station report dynamite plots, desertions, and storm damage with loss of life and injuries.

Lonsdale Returns From Arctic Explorations
Lord Lonsdale arrived in San Francisco aboard the Bertha from Kodiak Alaska. He describes a grueling overland route from Winnipeg to Melville Island and across Alaska with sixty nine dogs and eighteen Hudson Bay company workers including one cook. He traveled in deep snow for 1500 miles, losing many dogs and some natives to cold. His aim was to study Arctic birds and animals, not to seek the North Pole, and he plans to go to New York via Winnipeg after a few weeks here.
