Delegates Form Strong Prohibition Group in County Meet

Delegates from nearly every township gather at the library hall to form a countywide prohibition organization. William Schrur presides as temporary chair with Captain Robert Taggart elected permanent chairman. Rev Rankin endorses the amendment against the license system. A committee on organization reports an executive committee of seven and a county committee with representation from each precinct. Delegates vote to elect county officers and pledge support, with evening session featuring Prof White and Prof Frost urging vigorous campaign ahead of June 18 polls.

Sugar trust assigns to Havemeyers and Sueff

Report from New York on April 16 states all sugar trust companies assigned to Theodore A Havemeyer Henry D Havemeyer and Charles H Sueff to dodge the law. Prosecution against the North River sugar refining company rested on suing individuals. with assignments the companies lack property and cannot have receivers appointed.

Licenses Granted Fast in Ratead License Court

At the Rate of One 4 Minute A Lestown April 14 the license court opened at 9 this morning and adjourned before 2 with a dinner recess. In that time 286 licenses were granted, about one minute per license. There was one refusal and one under advisement for two trivial reasons. Last January seven licenses granted, making a total of 249 licenses for the county.

Destructive Meadville Fire Damages Skating Rink and Nearby

A fire at 1:30 Wednesday morning roared through the Casino skating rink in Meadville and spread to Tot man and Jacobson's carriage factory, causing up to 2000 dollars in damage with insurance about 3500 for ski goods. Six nearby buildings were damaged or destroyed in the blaze.

Town council reshapes street railway demands in Warren

April 17 1889 Warren Borough council revises the street railway terms. New plan requires grade between rails and one foot each side, with paving if present. track centered 30 feet from curb. fare capped at five cents. Fire committee reports Struthers hose company acted properly. water committee urged study of cheap clean water supply. Caldwell concert and excursion notices also announced.

The Standard's Ohio Deal Revealed

Curiaco, April 16, reports that Standard Oil has invested seven million dollars in Ohio oil properties over the last two years. It is understood the company will abandon its Pennsylvania fields, a move expected to shake the oil business and cause a major shift in production and strategy.
