Reported escalation of artillery and small arms fire in the Arras Givenchy sector suggests German forces may attack the salient between the Lys and Somme. British and French units brace for further action as patrols and bombardments intensify along the front line.
Military observers say German forces under Von Beulow may launch a major offensive between Arras and Givenchy to break Bethune and the coal fields. Basle dispatch reports Russian Bolshevik troops captured Baku in the Caucasus after Turkish reinforcements resisted. Baku sits in a rich oil region about 125 miles from the Turkish border and lies within land invaded by Turkish forces with Germany’s sanction following Bolshevik peace with Germany.

Four universities compete today at Annapolis in the national patriotic regatta on the Severn under the National Rowing Association. Entries include varsity eight from Pennsylvania Columbia and the Navy with freshman crews from Penn Syracuse and Navy set to row. The regatta is scheduled for the afternoon.
Aetna Chemical plant at Oakdale near Pittsburgh suffered six blasts this afternoon. Estimates list 100 to 206 workers killed and many more injured as the facility was wrecked. Officials from the company and Justice agents rushed to the scene while doctors went by special train to treat the injured.

London reports British airmen dropped more than 23 tons of bombs on railway centers, aerodromes and billets behind German lines on Thursday. Thirty German aircraft were destroyed and five more forced down. several enemy planes were captured or landed behind lines.
Ensign ER A Stone and Ensign Eric Moore survived eighty hours adrift after their seaplane collapsed in the English Channel. They clung to a pontoon for days, signaling with a carrier pigeon, and were finally rescued by an English trawler. Moore lost six toes to gangrene. Stone’s feet darkened but did not decay.
May 18 dispatches report Capt. Peterson of the American Aviation Corps shooting down two German airplanes in Lorraine within one minute. American and British fronts describe intensified artillery and aerial activity, with recon and patrols continuing. Paris notes four Polish reinforcements arriving to join Allied forces in France.
