Three men die and substantial property damage reported after an explosion of jitroglycerine on a Pennsylvania passenger train near Pleasant City Ohio. Windows shattered as cars derailed and the wreckage blocked the line.
At Pleasant City near Marietta Ohio a wagon carrying 324 quarts of nitroglycerin exploded injuring a Pennsylvania passenger and killing Harry Phelps and his son Waller along with another farmer W. O. Hughes. Windows shattered and property damaged as the blast sent debris across a wide area.
Washington May 17 George Creel head of public information apologized to Congress on the eve of inquiry after likening airman Pou to slums. In a letter to the House Rules Committee Creel said his remark was a jest and not meant to distort. He urged cooperation between Congress and the public information committee.
A Geneva report today denies that the German long range guns bombarding Paris were destroyed. The publication asserts the weapons were returned to the Krupp works for repairs rather than being demolished.
Washington May 1 Frank A Namee of Albany New York was named finance chairman of the Democratic National Committee facing Thomas L Chadburn and Morgenthau who have shared finance duties. Namee a hotel owner has ties to the St Denis New York and Hotel Albany among others in the state.
In London on May 17 three army deserters were arrested after being found in a cozy dugout near Yorkshire Cliffs. Officers uncovered fishing masks and steel helmets, and the men reportedly used nets to kill wandering sheep. A separate report notes an army plane carried mail from Washington to New York in light conditions on the same day.
I N S staff correspondent Bert Ford reports from the American line in Picardy May 16 noting Color Sergeant Thomas J. Fink of Johnson City Tennessee earned mention for saving comrades when a German shell hit a chow gun barn. Fink praised American firepower while recalling other frontline acts including a captured German sergeant Fritz Sauer dragged to safety by a brave youth with grenades.

He had recently arrived in the United States to demonstrate the machine to officials, after recently carrying nine passengers including government officials from Washington to the field without incident.
