Tokio May 20 The Japanese fleet acting with Allied forces in the Mediterranean reports a battle with German submarines and the sinking of a third Allied transport. The navy office issues a statement saying all aboard were saved and that on May 4 and 5 they sighted U boats and opened an attack, with results not yet known.

Rome May 20 The construction of wooden ships in Italian yards is on the increase. During the early months of the year only 26 000 tons of wooden ships were built.
