Waves and the Power of Giant Sea Waves
The Portland Oregonian reports that mid ocean waves average 30 to 40 feet but enormous waves can surge toward ships at over 100 miles per hour. If a wave hits the bow, the ship can ride over it. a stern impact may doom the vessel. Occasionally massive waves exceed 100 feet, even extinguishing masthead lights, and surprises like a 160 foot wave can appear on calm seas.
