Ajax Mining Awards Crosscut Contract to Andersen Brothers
Ajax Mining assigns a crosscut contract to Andersen Brothers to drive 1000 feet with option to extend to 4000. The work starts above Nurke and should reach the Ajax vein in about 500 feet, of which 350 feet have been cleared. Contractors are paid 11 cents per foot. Ajax provides power and a hoisting mucking machine. Manager A C Rixby says the mucking machine lowers costs and speeds the tunnel, claiming 17% faster progress in three shifts versus 104% without it. Machine costs 3500 and should pay for itself in the first 1000 feet. Andersen Brothers arrive from Michigan with steam shovel mining background.

Montana Miners Demand Equal Silver Purchase Deal
Charles S. Muffly, head of the Montana Mining Association, criticizes the Treasury and the Helena assay office for forcing Montana silver to go to Denver to obtain the $1.00 per ounce government price. He argues the local office should buy silver at the same rate as gold, saving miners express, insurance, and delays while aligning with the law’s intent to protect silver producers.
