Weight of doughboys stays high on French front
Infantry packs in France are not shedding weight as hoped. Experts say average soldier load should not exceed 61 pounds, but current tables force No. 3 rear rank riflemen to stagger under about 133 pounds. Machine gun crews carry 115 to 125 pounds each, making up about a quarter of the infantry. The bulk is fighting equipment, with weight kept to a bare minimum for bodily comfort.
