Wakefield's Early Growth From Water Works To School System

Wakefield grew from a spring fed water supply in 1901 to a town with a unified unit school system by 1923. The village built pumps, sewers, and later a city hall after incorporation in 1919 under Mayor Alvin Rummel. It expanded utilities, street lighting, and a modern bank in a period of rapid progress.

He describes the canal and timber lands, a fatal pit collapse near Colby Wis, and the first Bessemer cemetery relocation. He credits a Ramsay bridge built in 1886 with 66 feet span and notes Ironwood development efforts in 1885. The piece highlights local civic memory and upcoming dog show acts including trained police dogs. The unrelated laundry line appears as a local shopper note.

Earlier stripping used clam shell hoists at the Aurora mine in 1887, with four large pine supports and wires, but proved too costly.
