1924 to Be Biggest Year in Iron Ore Trade
The Great Lakes shipping season closed but iron ore activity is planned to surge in 1924. Lake freighters moved about 60,000,000 tons this year with estimates 10,000,000 to 20,000,000 tons above 1923. Dealers warn high grade ore may run short, but low grade ore remains abundant. Automobiles demand continues rising and manufacturers prepare for spring sales. Alex Colberg of Marquette University visits home for holidays.

Hurley Viewed Compared With Wisconsin Cities In Prohibition Debate
Wisconsin prohibition commissioner Herman W. Sachtsen defends Hurley against Detroit News claims, saying the town is no worse than Milwaukee or Green Bay and noting state and federal raids. He cites nearly 50 arrests locally in the past year and a federally indicted deputy sheriff for selling liquor, asserting Hurley’s conditions mirror broader state trends. The commissioner emphasizes reporting bias and asserts Wisconsin enforcement is strong, with Wakefield Iron Drive project and local school basketball event also noted.
