Anna Olson Chosen Valedictorian of Wakefield High 1923

Anna Olson named valedictorian for the Wakefield High School class of 1923 with about 91 percent average, and Alfie Winberg chosen salutatorian with a 90 percent average. Both will attend commencement June 21 with Prof. Lee Daggey as speaker.

County road work to get late start

The county road building season will not start until early May with several big contracts held over until next Saturday. W. S. Peters has 18 000 cubic yards of crushed rock ready for base work on the Tula and Bessemer jobs, and a new compressor and shop building are under construction. Bids will open for nearly five miles of road from Newpot to Ironwood, the Ramsay fill, and the Lake Superior line project, while Wakefield and Ironwood plans push paving and resurfacing efforts this summer.

Skud and Goldman Plan Major Store Remodeling Project

The Skud and Goldman Co will remodel a city property starting May 1 with plans to raise the structure to sidewalk level, install a modern front, and overhaul interiors. The basement will become a larger bargain center, main floors reorganized, second floor converted to a ready to wear department, and exterior repainting or brickwork completed to showcase a progressive city business.

Wakefield to Seek Bids for Memorial Building Theatre Use

Wakefield Michigan City Commission will open bids May 10 1923 for theatre use of the Wakefield Memorial Community Building. Successful bidder may use the theatre Tuesday Thursday Saturday and Sunday nights 6 PM to 11 45 PM for theatre purposes only except first Sunday night of each month reserved by the City. Bidder must furnish a 25000 surety bond and electricity. the city provides booth equipment janitor service and threat. Right to reject any or all bids reserved.

Island for sale near Dunham on Mink Lake

An island of about 1.16 acres on Mink Lake five miles south of Dunham is offered for homestead entry with 90 day World War II veteran priority. After August 21 the tract becomes open to general entry under public land laws. Official parcel description lists Sections 10 and 11 Township 45 Range 44 West Mich Mer. Bids Sought For City Theatre Operation And Fire Truck Purchase

The city commission authorized bids for operating the Community theatre with a May 10 deadline and surety bonds covering damages. Bidders cannot use the building on Monday or Friday nights. A $12,500 warrant funded the American LaFrance fire truck, which passed official tests with the booster pump exceeding guarantees by pumping 818 gallons per minute versus the 750 Gallons per minute minimum. Mrs. Louis Sacks hosted a party for fourteen ladies featuring music and cards, with prizes to Mrs. McGraw and Mrs. Walstrom and a luncheon of chicken chop suey, coffee, cakes, and salads. A Yiddish solo by Mrs. Sacks capped the afternoon. Attendees included Mesdames Powell, Wills, Seegar, McGraw, Walham, Haseid, Hasbrook, Wojciechowski, Malgrew, J. Pellerin, A. Olson, KR. Kent, Wm. Gilbert, and Miss Jennie Delmet.

Kent Wins Jacobson Property Bid Near City Hall

John H. Kent topped three bids for the J. W. Jacobson property beside the city hall with 180 dollars. Bids of 150 and 60 were submitted. Kent plans to move the building to a site near the Peoples Co operative Co store. The commission postponed much business to the next meeting. The city ordered nearly 20000 dollars of Albinson Construction Company accounts paid, representing claims by various firms against city payments due.

To Open Cleaning Shop In Former Post Office Building

Charles Secks will open a pressing repairing and dry cleaning business in the former post office building after May 1. He has considerable experience in the line and will install complete drying and cleaning equipment, aiming to be among the best in the region. Don Patsk has transferred Wakefield Bowling Alleys to his brother Frank and departs Wednesday evening for Detroit to settle there.
