Farm Bureau notes cost of horse keep low
Wayne Dinsmore, secretary of the Horse Association of America, says cheap grain and hay keep horses affordable. A 1600 pound work horse costs about 22.40 per year under March prices, with examples from Missouri showing low maintenance. Horse supply has fallen since 1910, while breeding declined 1913 to 1928 and shortages persist. Dealers will seek animals nationwide, and many farmers may reduce land or adjust purchases, aiding long term breeders who shed older stock at 5 to 6 years. Leaflet No 210 is available from county agents or the Horse Association in Chicago.
