Silage Feeding for Steers in Home Feed Lot

Animal husbandry experts advise feeding silage ad libitum on the first day of arrival, with gradual grain supplementation. For a 1000 pound steer, start around fifty pounds of silage daily, add two to three pounds of linseed or cottonseed meal, and prefer linseed when prices match. Consider two to three pounds of meal per 1000 pounds of steer or a no to half full grain ration, noting Ames tests show higher margins with less grain. If full feeding is chosen, increase grain gradually to 15 to 18 pounds over 30 to 40 days, always feeding silage before grain to prevent digestive upsets.

Take Proper Care of Ewes in Winter

A sheep extension guide from Town State College advises using surplus feed for breeding ewes and grazing in stubble, followed by clover and blue grass pasture.
