Muscatine Name Tied to Warlike Mascouten Tribe History
The Mascouten, called the Fire Nation by French explorers and the little prairie people by their own, gave Muscatine its name. From Champlain’s 1616 reports onward they fought nearby peoples, were driven across the Mississippi by 1728, and vanished from white records after 1779. Major Forsyth camped near Grand Muscatine in 1818, and Muscatine Island and Muscatine Slue terms appear in 19th century journals before Muscatine County was established in 1836.
