Self Insurance Cut in Corn Loan Renewal Plan
Farmers save with a new self-insurance option tied to corn loan renewals. Under the plan borrowers pay one fifth of a cent per bushel to the county association, which forwards it to the Commodity Credit Corporation to fund loss coverage for fire, wind, flood, hail, theft and more. This replaces the former primary and secondary insurance costs, reducing annual outlay from about a half cent per bushel. The change also reduces paperwork and county visits, easing reseal and loan processing. A storage allowance of 7 cents per bushel may be earned on resealing and storing for an extra 12 months, usable to build more cribs or bins.
