The 1898 cotton season opens with prices still low due to a large crop. J R Kelly urges reform in Marel Term 1898 finances. He notes stenographer pay of 15 per day and solicitor fees draining the treasury, proposes making county officers salaried at about 600 yearly, extending terms to four years, and pooling insolvent money into a separate fund to reduce politics. He calls for streamlined costs and staffing.
In a letter to the editor a reader calls the Grand Jury to address the poor state of the county poor farm. The author condemns dilapidated houses, calls for farm improvements and painting, and questions funding priorities versus inmates housed in the jail and criminals. Report recalls the Cordyle clash between Kiler and Powell in which Kiler died from wounds or surgery. Powell, once thought mortally wounded, escaped under guard and remains at large, with supporters guessing a defense would have led to acquittal. Guard L W Parker jailed for criminal neglect. Regiment, on a 10 day furlough in Knoxville, reports army life hard yet praises his marksmanship. Edna Brown visited the Central city Friday and a select Drayton society entertainment by J K B Joiner honored the Misses Tipton. Part of the Drayton items were cut for space, to be continued next week.
