Murder of Dr Gus McArthur Shocks Arthur GA Community

Special to the Journal from M ar R July 28 reports Dr Gus McArthur a well known citizen of Arthur GA about 11 miles from here was murdered yesterday. He was talking with Mr Burch when Mr Oliver Bushee summoned them and four pistol shots were heard. Burch found the doctor dead. The motive is unknown. He leaves a father a dentist near Macon and two brothers one an engineer on the G and A railway and the other a dentist. He was four times related to Mrs J M Whitehead of this city.

Convention at Perry Chooses Lewis for Third District Nomination

The Perry Georgia convention of the Third district met Wednesday the 22nd with large attendance. Delegates backed Hon. E. B. Lewis of Macon for congress, with strong shows of support from Houston and other counties. The body endorsed the Chicago platform and urged Democratic victory in November.

Mr. Tom Slade, struck by lightning at Ebenezer church on Thursday the 16th, is rapidly improving. Dr. Baker of Cordele calls it a very close escape from death and reports a full recovery is not yet certain.

Death of Dooly Prominent Citizen Daniel Bowen

Mr Daniel J Bowen died at his Cordele home after several weeks of fever. He was 42, slated to turn 42 two days later. The funeral was at Whitsett burial ground near Coney last Friday at 10 o clock. He leaves a wife one child and many relatives and friends who mourn his loss.

Obituaries note Mr John Tripp near Drayton dies of yellow fever leaving a wife and two children. Other notices mourn Brown Speight age three, Lula Jordan from Snow, and infant Little Tove Lewis among several local deaths. The Unadilla Advertiser extends sympathy to Bere Morrison and all bereaved families.

Cordele Bookkeeper J P Sutton Dies in Morphine Overdose

Mr J P Sutton, a 23 year old bookkeeper for Cordele Cooperage Co, died Friday morning from an overdose of morphine. He boarded with Mr Moore, traveled from Fayetteville North Carolina last September, and was the son of Hon Thos Sutton of Fayetteville. Remains sent home for interment.

Will Preach at Cordele by Missionary Rev G P Bostick

Rev G P Bostick a Chinese foreign missionary will preach at Cordele Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Sunday August 9 and lecture at 4 p.m. on China customs. He will preach again at 8 p.m. and also visit Vienna Baptist Church on Monday the 10th. He is described as a very eloquent preacher and attendees are unlikely to be disappointed.

Racket Store Planned for Unadilla by McKenzies

Messrs George and Tannie McKenzie of Cordele, after selling their bakery, plan to open a Racket Store at Unadilla in a few days. Robert McKenzie of Arabi will manage the Unadilla store and Tannie McKenzie will run the Arabi location.

Pleasant Social Held for Miss Virgil Bixler of Mobile

A high enjoying social in the city hosted by Miss Mamie Leonard for Miss Virgil Bixler of Mobile Alabama. Couples attended and danced and at 11:80 refreshments were served with guests praising the hostesses for a royal entertainment.

Cordele Man Hurt Dragged Under Wagon in Accident

Mr. Lockett of Cordele Georgia was badly bruised when his wagon slipped and dragged him as he returned from Snow with his father in law Dr J A Park's goods to Unadilla. A nearby horse narrowly trampled him but he escaped serious harm.

Local Warehouse Venture Gains Noted Support

Considerable interest is shown by Vienna merchants in exporting cotton buyers for the season. The Central Warehouse on McDonald street is rented to Moke Turner Taokaon and W D Murray and will operate as Jackson and Murray under a firm name. The new partnership is praised for high character integrity and past success, with expectations of liberal patronage.
