The Dooly County Veterans Association held its annual Confederate Veterans Reunion at the Campground last Saturday with thousands present. Gen Clement A Evans spoke on valor and loyalty, and officers for the coming year were elected led by Rev J J Hyman as Commander. The group announced the next United Confederate Veterans reunion will be in Atlanta in June 1898 and pledged to support it. the Dooly gathering will next be held at Unadilla.
A large populist rally is set for Cordele on Saturday with Judge James K. Hines delivering the address. Prominent speakers from various parts of the state will participate in the day's program.
Children’s Day in this city was celebrated at the Methodist church on Sunday after a postponement due to scarlet fever. A fine program of songs recitations and addresses featured speakers J F Calhoun Robert Lane and Misses Mary Irwin Nina Davies Lizzie Horne along with Lucy Calhoun and Leone Powell. The exercises were greatly enjoyed by all present.

Vienna defeated Montezuma 11 to 1 after taking a strong early lead and wide margin. Vienna players Simmons Stewart Bushes Pelton Carlisle Stovall Pate and Wicker starred in the win with solid fielding and pitching by Stovall. Montezuma made a lone run as Vienna cruised to victory with timely hits and strong defense.
Last Sunday night Charley Tolner's joiner mill burned. He hired bloodhounds to track the incendiary and followed a lead to J C Roberts's home. The raid involved Joiner, Butler, Roberts, Varnadon and Kimmie Varnadow in a clash with knives pistols and guns. Warrants issued. Roberts bond $1000 Varnadon $700. Committal trial set for 28th. Attorneys for prosecution Busbee Crum Busbee and defense Thom son Whipple.
Names of Misses Sara and Callie Coney appear on the honor roll of the Home School for young ladies at Athens. They are daughters of Col. W Coney of Dooly county. The sisters have many friends in America who will be pleased by their academic success.
