A fierce Sunday storm killed five men and wounded many in Dakota while 12 convicts escaped and nine were recaptured within hours. Cordele suffered major damage with houses wrecked, a Negro church destroyed, a chimney torn from a dwelling, a shed ruined, and a barrel factory along with a Holiness church destroyed. Telephone service was out for days. Reports said two small Negro children may have died in a blown house, but details remained unclear.
Considerable dissatisfaction arose as the Veterans Association were not granted full refreshment stand rights at the Camp Ground next Saturday. It is assured that all attendees will be supplied with free ice water and lemonade throughout the day.
The obituary honors J W Passmore born September 16 1846 who died April 12 1897. A Missionary Baptist Church member since 1867 he served bravely in war and tilled the soil, leaving a wife seven children and several grandchildren. Publication is requested by Mt Pleasant church committee and a tonic advertisement follows.
