Dispatches from London and other cities report fighting near Pekin with Chinese forces advancing toward Sung Lin Ching Tang Chow and Tang Chow. Allies' position remains uncertain as imperial troops move and telegraph lines fail, with southern mandarins issuing proclamations supporting occupation.
Desperate assault at the legations ends with Chinese forces retreating. Americans suffer seven Marines killed and 15 wounded. one child dies. Up to 2000 shells reportedly fall on the relief efforts as British and Americans reach the gate and face limited Chinese resistance. Boxers described as powerless.
Father DeHets a Laxorist minister arrived at SHANGHAI and joined 6 000 converts in a six week stand against 20 000 Boxers at a village 40 miles northwest. They fought with rifles swords and a small cannon until General Sung intervened promising spare Christians if they disarmed and left. DeHets was escorted toward the coast as Poitsang fell and the converts received food for a week.
The Confederate Association of the Army of Tennessee protests General J B Gordon attending the Grand Army of the Republic encampment in Chicago. They condemn Shaw's Atlanta remarks and call for Gordon to be censured for attending and accepting the invitation. The resolution was unanimously adopted by the association.
Atlanta reports an unusually large slate of petitions and bills in the clerk of the superior court and city court offices for the September terms. One suit targets Sheriff Noel and is brought by William W. Herrin who claims pay due for 19 months of bailiff service plus $400 for political influence. He alleges a 50 dollar monthly wage since July 1900 and seeks payment from the county. He also claims 700 dollars received earlier and demands the remainder.
A $6,000,000 mortgage to Mercantile Trust and Deposit Co of Baltimore is recorded in Atlanta. The loan covers all assets including cars rails wires poles steam heat pipes and plants. Extensions reach to the Chattahoochee River and new prison site at Lakewood with part of the funds for extensions.
Macon August 20. Conductor W A Sheftall on the Central railroad between Macon and Atlanta faces a violent passenger who refuses to pay fare. Sheftall strikes the man, who with others leaves at Summerfield. A second assailant aims a pistol but misses as the train moves.
Dustin Georgia August 18 report says Seaboard Air Line plans a Lyons to Dublin branch within months. Dublin would be within 120 miles of Savannah, shortening travel from 170 miles, and link with the Macon and Dublin road to provide Macon another line to Savannah.
Washington Aug 21 The cabinet decided to reject Li Hung Changs appeal for a cassation of hostilities. The reply will be sent to the Chinese government immediately with reasons. Rejection rests on China failing to comply with the declaration of the United States dated Aug 19.
The viceroys of Nanking and Hu Nan urged that no personal indignities be shown the emperor and empress dowager and renewed assurances of friendship. They request that Chinese sovereigns not be treated as prisoners of war, a matter under consideration by powers. Royal figures are deemed crucial to the war effort and not ordinary non combatants. Local reports note imperial forces besieging the legations.
Aug 21. No confirmation from London on urgent allied troop needs. Far East dispatches say current units proceed toward Nagasaki to decide moves to China or Manila. Forces listed include Ninth Infantry, Fourteenth Infantry, Fifth Artillery, and various cavalry units sailing or en route.
Wesley Arnold, a mid sized Black man, pleaded guilty in Carroll Superior Court to bigamy. He acknowledged two wives, Laura Arnold at the county poor farm and a second wife in Temple, saying he acted to avoid trouble. He received a $50 fine and eight months in the chain gang.
Savannah reports Alfred Green, a Black man, stabbed to death by James Williams after a quarrel over a stolen knife. The incident occurred at Isle of Hop, Williams fled, Green died from chest wound. Other items note a 14 year old killed by a runaway mule near Newston and court actions in Piclons and Ringgold, plus an abortion arrest in Arpanta and a fatal card game death in St Augustine. France seeks peace representatives as Li Hung Chang relays messages to power negotiators.
