No Overproduction of Melons Feared at Kiwanis Meeting
J J Parrish secretary of the Southwest Georgia Melon Growers Association told the Vialia Kiwanis Club that despite a big rise in acres planted to melons this year good growers will fetch strong prices. He expects Georgia melon acreage to reach 75 000 in three years and called melons a future money crop. Parrish recalled last year when orders for 28 to 30 pound melons could not be filled at 400 to 600 per car while 20 pound melons sold slowly at 150 per car.

James B Hall Dies After Brief Illness at 65
James B Hall aged 65 died last Saturday evening at his home after a few weeks illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 30 pm at North Thompson church with ministers J T B Anderson and O O Williams officiating. Born in Johnson County on December 8 1856 he married Minerva Brock forty four years ago. He is survived by his wife a daughter Mrs C M Whitaker of Vidalia and seven sons S J D Hall of Vidalia H J Hall Waycross M E Hall Vidalia F W Hall Eastman P L Hall Vidalia M J Hall and J P Hall Florence.

Council appoints committee drafts new charter for Yudalia
In the April session the city council approved drafting a new charter with Mayor Jackson and Attorney Pattillo to draft the document. Representative Lankford will be asked to enact provisions at the next legislature. The council also moved to enforce sewer connections gradually starting in the business district and to condemn surface closets within the fire limit. A 727 Case tractor purchase was authorized to maintain streets. Plans for remodeling City Hall include better jail facilities and a fireproof city records vault. An extra night policeman was authorized at 70 dollars monthly. The council will invite bids for a 100 000 gallon reservoir and confirmed city employee accident protection with a new compensation policy.

Reidsville Masons Confer Third Degree at Reunion
Vidalia Lodge 330 F. and A. M. held a regular meeting in Reidsville where Rising Sun Lodge uniform degree team conferred the third degree on Dickerson Holton and Abernathy. Raid on Montgomery County Farm Uncovers Moonshine Equipment
Sunday night officials raided the farm of Ewell Dickson in Montgomery County and found beer tanks and whiskey making gear. The beer was poured out and no arrests were made. Monday night police seized six gallons of shine as part of a broader crackdown led by Chief Mallard aimed at bootleggers in Vidalia.

Rayford's Store Destroyed by Fire in Burglary
Rayford's Supply Store run by G. W. Rayford was gutted by a fire discovered about 4 am Tuesday. The building owned by Mrs. J. W. Poe sustained heavy interior damage. the stock and fixtures were a total loss. The hall of the local lodge of Odd Fellows on the second story also suffered damage. Firemen contained the blaze and prevented spread to nearby structures.
