Rev T E Sikes on behalf of Vidalia Primitive Baptist church invites the Georgia Primitive Baptists to hold their next session in Vidalia. The conference, with over 100 delegates and visitors, will be held next August or September. A special committee, of which Sikes is a member, will decide the site in the coming weeks.
Messrs Heath and Banks hold Southern rights for The Daughter of Dawn and tour many South Georgia towns showing the Indian film. Arrangements are made for Millen Claxton Swainsboro and Dublin with more dates booked as they travel.
Music for Sunday morning includes an offertory prelude by Bach and a solo A Song of Confidence by Briggs sung by Miss Willie Bomar. The morning sermon centers on Enlarge ment in our work for Christ with an evening evangelistic service featuring Czerny and Reich selections.
Temporary Vidalia Kiwanis Club organized last Wednesday at the New Vidalia Hotel with Judge W. C. Griffin of Eastman as guest. Eastman Kiwanis Club to sponsor. charter survey deemed satisfactory. A livestock clipping from Comanche Texas reports farmer W. B. Sterling using 30 to 35 hogs to clean fallen cotton bolls and deter boll weevils. Industrial agent M. F. Melton notes experimental plots show hog range yields roughly half a bale per 23 acres, while unmanaged areas produce far less.
The Vidalia public School begins its spring term Monday with Superintendent Downs hoping for strong attendance. He expects well organized work across departments and asks patrons to visit the school Saturday January 1st for entrance cards to avoid Monday morning interruptions.
Judge R N Hardeman of Toombs Superior Court grants a new trial for Lee Curry who was sentenced to death for the murder of Burley Phillips. Attorneys David S Atkinson and Lawrence Abrahams filed the motion. Curry is confined in Chatham county jail and had claimed self defense during the trial.
Dr J K E Mercer expresses relief at Sunday's heavy rain as thieves used the flooded roads to steal his Ford Coupe from Vidalia Hospital garage. The car was recovered off the G and F Railway crossing, abandoned after the thieves wrecked it in a ditch.
Mr. Carl Jones of Nunez was in Vidalia on Sunday for an unspecified visit.
A Toombs county hog sale on Friday January 7 at 1 00 pm in Riley features 42 pure bred Duroc hogs sold by Richmond and McArthur of Ailey with auctioneers H L Inglehart and Col Hengst. Robt J Evans American Duroc Association secretary and County Agent T Y Williford urge farmers to attend and buy, claiming strong bloodlines and good prices amid favorable market conditions.
The brothers and sisters of Mr C Smith express deep gratitude to friends for kindness after his death. They also thank Dr Franklin of Swainsboro for untiring services.
Burglars broke into Vidalia Pharmacy and took a large amount of jewelry. The Vidalia Ice and Coal Co. office was entered the same night, with the cash register robbed of checks and money. No clues have been found yet.
G C Smith, a Lyons businessman aged 50, died at Franklin Sanitarium after injuries from a Friday night collision with a Hudson touring car near Swainsboro. His son in law Walter Stephens was injured. car occupants Williams and others escaped with minor bruises. Funeral held Tuesday at his sister’s home with burial in Pine Crest cemetery.
Mrs. Chess Abernathy entertained Wednesday night for her guest Miss Mary Knox Henderson of Savannah. The home featured holiday decorations and rock music followed by refreshments. Attending were Misses Sarah Smith Claudia Stith Gertrude Stith Tommy Belle Coleman Henderson and several men from the Abernathy circle including Leon Oliver Dalton Stith Venable Anderson Leighton Tillman Hal Mitchell and Mr. and Mrs. Abernathy.
